So I think we ve all complained at one point in time or another about expensive tickets to go see an NHL game, especially after the lockout in 2004-2005. Well, I guess it could be worse than being a Red Wings fan. This is a longer post, but I think it s a very interesting topic and I m hoping to hear from you guys what your thoughts are.
Paul @ Kukla s Korner linked to a very interesting article about the NJ Devils ticket prices for next season. They are planning on moving to the new Prudential Center and with that move comes an increase in ticket prices. For prime lower bowl seats, the prices are increasing by 114% .
Yep this year at the Continental Airlines Arena, fans in the second row of the lower bowl pay $70 a game (which comes to $2,870 a season). Next year, the same seats will cost $150 per game or $6,150 in a season. The 2000 fans that occupy north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals these premium seats will get a new luxury in the new ice rink: all you can eat buffets, which are included in the ticket price. The two arena restaurants will have sushi stations, prime rib, and other food options. Admittedly, it s not like they are giving away hot dogs and pizza, north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals it does sound like these fans will get high quality food.
Still, that s a lot of money for hockey tickets especially when those prices don t factor in the playoff tickets, which typically cost more than the regular season tickets. I think they ll see a lot of fans giving up these tickets because they can t afford them while they may see more corporations picking up these tickets.
We knew it was going to go up, said Gary Mouridy of Readington, who has been a season-ticket holder since 2001. We didn t expect it to double. Mouridy north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals doesn t have much time to decide north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals whether to pay the extra amount. He received the notice from the team last weekend. The Devils want to know his intentions by tomorrow.
What I thought was also interesting is that the second level ticket prices are also increasing by up to 50%. Currently, the best second bowl seats cost $58. At the new Prudential Center, north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals the same seats will cost you $88. To give you an idea of how much money that is, the best seats at the Joe are $85 at face value.
Fortunately, fans will be able to purchase $10-20 tickets north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals for the nosebleeds so you can still go to the game at a reasonable price. I ve never been to CAA, but apparently the upper bowl seats suck when it comes to viewing the action on the ice. The new Prudential Center will apparently give a much better view for fans high up so that s an improvement!
If you re already on the glass and in a club seat, your experience doesn t change that much, Ganis said. But common fans get better sightlines, more bathrooms, better food and wider concourses. The great irony is everyone says these buildings are for the fat cats, but the average fans really get their money s worth.
I skimmed the forum at the same website this article came from and it seemed fan opinions were mixed. Many were just excited to be going to a new arena and only plan on making it to 10 games or less per season so the increase in ticket prices doesn t hit them as hard. Others struggled to see how this would be a good move considering NJ and New York City have like a bazillion teams in such a small area. Are people really willing to spend that much money to go to NJ when they could watch another sports team at a cheaper price? Obviously, corporations will be able to afford these seats, but are they going to pick NJ over NYC?
TeamMarketing.com has created a fan cost index for each of the four major leagues and compares teams within each league. The fan cost index (FCI) basically creates the average price it costs a family of four to get four tickets (average ticket price), four small soft drinks, four hot dogs, two small beers, two adult-sized baseball caps, parking, and two game programs. Yes, I realize that season ticket holders don t buy all that at every game, but I think it creates a good way to compare the cost of NHL games by team.
Where do the Devils stand in the 2006-2007 season? NJ fans pay the third highest FCI (only behind Montreal and Boston) in the NHL with the FCI of $327.66. Their FCI increased by 5.8% from last season when it was only at $309.68 (#1 FCI in the league at that time).
Maybe you are thinking that their FCI should be higher because of their dominant play over the past decade. Well, let s take a look at the Detroit north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals Red Wings FCI over the past two years. This season, a family of four will pay $261.51 per game, which is 20.19% less than NJ fans pay. The Wings FCI is just above the league average, which is $258.08 this season. Detroit s FCI did not change from the 2005-2006 season north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals to this year s.
According to ESPN.com s attendance spreadsheet for the 2006-2007 season, the Devils are 26th in the league for attendance. They are currently averaging 13,978 per game, which makes CAA only 73.4% full.
I could be wrong, but the hundreds of $10 or $20 tickets in the new arena may boost attendance in that sense especially since the Prudential Center will apparently be a much easier place to access than the CAA and also provide a better view from the upper bowl.
Eric McErlain at Off Wing Opinion showed us the top NHL average north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals ticket prices on StubHub.com . The NJ Devils tickets came in at #6 at $95 apiece. The Red Wings average ticket price was $93 putting them at #7. Eric wondered why the Devils were so high up especially with the poor attendance.
But what s up with the New Jersey Devils coming in at #6? The team has had a horrible time drawing for years, which may very well indicate that there is a lively ticket resale market for the best seats while the less expensive seats might go unsold.
One of his readers wrote in and suggested that StubHub prices were so high for Devils tickets because a lot of Rangers, Islanders, and Flyers north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals fans buy their road game tickets on StubHub. I don t really know if that is the case, but it does seem reasonable.
I actually just went to Ticketmaster and searched for two tickets for the Devils home game on March 30th to see if you can easily get tickets to those games (I m thinking about people wanting road game tickets). The best available were for two seats in the lower bowl (row 25) at $90 apiece. So I don t know if the StubHub explanation is the correct one, but I don t have any other ideas.
I guess after reading all that, I m a bit more appreciative of the Wings maintaining ticket prices (both in the regular season and for playoffs). Yes, the tickets do seem expensive, north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals but it could be a lot worse! I just wonder if our ticket prices north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals will go up by a ton when we get a new arena. The Joe is one of the older arenas in the NHL so that may help account for our lower ticket prices.
north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals The ESPN spreadsheet has the Wings at No. 2 in the league in terms of attendance averaging 20,066 per game (100% full). north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals Essentially, Wings fans pay less money for a team equally as good as the Devils and there are more competition north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals for these seats. If any team could afford to raise ticket prices, it d be the Wings because the demand fits (yes, I know there are a ton of empty seats at the Joe, but people can t buy them because they are sold out).
[...] Behind the Jersey takes a look at NHL Ticket Prices, noting that even the all you can eat buffets that are included in the lower bowl NJ Devils tickets next year won t make up for the 114% increase in prices. [...]
The ticket price increase was expected .in order to make all the upgrades needed they had to hike ticket prices. Being way out in southern north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals California now I m probably only going to be able to make it to a couple games next season. Yes it will affect people but corporations are going to eat this up and maybe that extra money will lead to better marketing at last which is what Devils north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals fans have been dying to see.
In a word, yes. The Devils have been tailoring this arena to corporate north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals clients in an unprecedented way. They’ve aggressively courted their new neighbors in Newark, and sold the arena as a nightlife experience rather than just a venue for a hockey game.
I remember north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals seeing the first images of the luxury boxes at The Rock, and I’m still picking my jaw off the ground â€" they’re absolutely stunning. Modern, hip…they make the current models at the CAA look like a motel room by comparison. The amenities and perks the Devils have cooked up for big-ticket fans is impressive; the fact that this is the first time the team will be playing in an actual city â€" rather than a swamp â€" should attract more corporate clients for the lower bowl than in the past.
As you noted, the nightmare scenario for the Devils and their fans is to move to the new building and not increase attendance. I’m impressed north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals they’ll be offering $10-20 tickets, which is a nice start. But where this team has failed time and time again is simply getting bodies inside the building, and keeping them coming back. This new arena demands aggressive ticket plans and ticket sales that will have some of the fans who haven’t been going to games coming to the new building. And if the game-going experience is as stellar
as it’s being sold to be â€" hell, the sightlines and acoustics alone would sell me â€" then some of these fans who are “samplingâ€ the Devils will come back for more. The old building wasn’t exactly north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals a selling point for the newbies.
Again, your article was a very good and fair look at how much we Devils fans have to pony up to see a team in an ancient building in the middle of a swamp. Combine that with nearly zero mass transit to that arena; parking fees that have grown steadily each season; zero nightlife within walking distance of the arena; two decades of short-sighted marketing from the team; competition from over a dozen other professional and minor league teams in the area that offer more value for their ticket north shore lake tahoe vacation rentals prices; and having to sell a style of play that the media consistently claims is slowly killing the sport, and

Ah! but do you really understand the rules of the pursuit you agreed to engage? If you don t understand how airlines price their tickets the playing field is tilted (pitch for my UK friends). I know. You think that's a stupid question. It's actually not though. Let me start you with two words: dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories breeding dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories rights. Kentucky Derby winner "Street Sense" has made almost $3 million in his eight career starts. His breeding rights are now worth about $40 million. Let me give you another word: insurance. I'm not privy to what the owner for Street Sense Jim Tafel is paying for insurance, but if he's insuring the horse's dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories full value he's likely paying more for that than the winning purse of the Derby and the Preakness combined. Let me give you one more word: Barbaro.
With all that in mind, I think that we might come to a point where an owner whose horse won the Kentucky Derby could actually threaten to retire the horse to have him stand at stud or try to sell the horse before the Preakness. dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories I know I would have done that had I purchased Teufelsberg for $9,000. Right before that horse ran in the Derby, his owners sold a 25 percent stake to media agent Jeff Singer. The horse finished fourth to last.
Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to consider the question of whether a Derby winner should run the Preakness. So I called Carl Nafzger, the trainer for "Street Sense" to talk to me about it.
Carl: A lot of things come into play now. If you win the Preakness, you go on up in value, but if happen to lose the Preakness, then there's a question if the Derby a fluke. You're risking everything as you take a next step forward in the Triple Crown.
Carl: No, but I can see the day if you won the Triple Crown, dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories that that day you may retire. But these, the owners like Mr. Tafel, they are people, they are sportsmen. They do want to go for the Triple Crown. It's a goal in sports that anybody in horse racing wants to attain.
Carl: I think there would be an acceleration in value. I cannot foresee a great jump in value and acceleration, but basically it would more or less confirm the value that they have now, that he is truly a top horse, a horse in his own category.
Carl: It is always a consideration in what happened to Barbaro, but that's like a running back worrying about his knee going out. You cannot consider that. It's always in the back of your head all the time with these valuable animals with all horses, but you can't stop it from doing your job.
Athletic dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories Director for Peanuts I was shocked when I saw the number: $25,008. That's how much Oregon's new athletic director Pat Kilkenny is getting paid to work. Fine. Kilkenny is apparently a guy that just cashed out of his insurance agency , but even if I had millions, there's no way I'd work for that -- especially with Phil Knight being the biggest booster at the place. This whole thing got me thinking that it's probably a good time to look at the salaries of athletic directors since you've all seen the college football and basketball coach salary stats a million times. I first found out that in 1990, the average base salary for a Division I AD, according to a U.S. General dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories Accounting Survey, was $80,047. That means if everything stayed dog clothes and accessories and travel accessories the same, factoring in inflation, today's D-I athletic directors would be making about $125,000. But they're making at least double that. Just to get an idea of what some of these guys are making, I did a couple searches and came up with a less than perfect list, let's call it a sampling, of what the CEO of athletic departments are making.
Empty Seats For the Final Four, I did a segment on the folks at World Access, an insurance agency that is in the unique business of selling ticket insurance. Well, they just dropped a very interesting survey on my desk. Check out this stat: One in 12 people reported that they missed an event that they had purchased tickets for in the past year because of unexpected circumstances, which has something to do with the fact that 33 percent of fans said they have purchased tickets for an event three or more months in advance. The survey was obviously commissioned in the best interest of World Access, which sells ticket insurance for five percent of the cost of the ticket. First, I think the information here is relevant, but I also think this business is a real winner for the next couple years and there will be many players trying to get a piece of it. Did I Really See What I Saw? I went to Game 4 of the Nets-Cavs series at the Continental Airlines Arena on Monday to do a story on the Nets. As I was passing the Cavs bench during the game, I saw LeBron James during a time out, with what looked to be a gold-plated (it's hard to tell from a distance, but it wasn't the standard silver variety) nail clipper. He was sitting there just cleaning up his nails during a time out. Now I know he has a habit of biting his nails during games, but it just struck me as weird that he was giving himself a manicure during a timeout. I also want to know if that clipper is 24 karats.

I was pondering recently hotel with spa room cincinnati on how effective social media has been for the Obama administration.  President Obama is the first president hotel with spa room cincinnati to use social media while serving his term as president.  He is also the first president to regularly go on talk shows (both day and night).  In a way, he has allowed for his presidency to not be so cold, distant and separate from America and that s all thanks to the new age of social media.
Social media can be both a good thing and a bad thing for any administration, because the facts are getting out there faster than a news report can hit the television screens or a story can be written.  In 140 characters or less, the news can be passed on in seconds.
In a way, no matter how much the NHL pays for focus groups, they are in danger thanks to social media and how it s being used.  Now, it s not just the NHL that s in danger, it s also the NHLPA and every hockey player trying to throw their own propaganda out there.  Simply put, it s turning a lot of fans off from the NHL, myself included.
Currently, I have plane tickets to head overseas to watch hockey.  I was hoping a deal would be in place before November 1, so I could go to Hawaii instead.  I could start booking my tickets to Dallas and still get a vacation in to the sunny island state.
The NHL s rejection that we saw tweeted left and right from the media, then what the NHLPA had to say, and then what the NHL had to say last Thursday I think this so called negotiation isn t worth it anymore.  How hard is it to just come up with a list of the demands that both sides want, sit down at a conference table and just work it out?  How hard is it to stay in the damn conference room together hotel with spa room cincinnati and work it out?  How hard is it to hire a non-partial mediator to sit there and help both sides come up with an agreeable solution?  Both sides have to give a little in order to gain a lot.
Players taking to Twitter to blast the NHL is dumb.  50/50 and honor current contracts?  Sounds hotel with spa room cincinnati nice in theory, but apparently it doesn t work.  How hard is it to ask the NHL why that request doesn t work?  Why can t you both take that 50/50 and try to move forward?
It s not the frustration that a season hasn t started yet it s watching the way the so-called CBA negotiation is going (or NOT GOING).  Social media allows us all to take a look at what is happening in the so-called talks (or NON-TALKS).  We see players hotel with spa room cincinnati saying the NHL is dumb for rejecting their 3 proposals.  They bitch and complain on Twitter.  They try to get fans to sympathize with them and their loss.  They keep trying to compare losing their millions to that blue collar guy that spends thousands of dollars on season tickets just to sit in the last row of the arena.
They want us to sympathize?  Why?  Truthfully, you want to know what we think?  We think both sides are the stupid parties because the end result is that there is NO HOCKEY.  We don t really care about your CBA.  We don t care how much money you re losing or how long you have to wait until you can hit free agency.  We don t care about your revenue sharing.
Throw in social media and we see the mud slinging and how the lack of negotiation is going down bouncing back from this is going to be worse than the last lockout.  There was no Twitter back then.  That first year back after the last lockout, I remember how empty MSG was.  It took a long time for those seats to fill up again, and we re talking about an Original hotel with spa room cincinnati Six club, and the most famous arena in the world.
Tickets to sit in the front row were only $120 at MSG.  I paid about $80-$90 at Continental Airlines Arena for the first few rows from the ice to see the Devils.  I think it was $60-$80 at Nassau Coliseum to see the Rangers play there.
Non-hockey fans in New York talk about how much that last lockout hurt hockey.  They say it was a  devastating blow.   It took many of them years before they d even step back into an arena because they found other things that were more interesting.  In New York, our latest interest seems to fall on the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. hotel with spa room cincinnati They ll have a couple of KHL games in January.  It s the IT place to go these days for concerts and sporting events and they currently do not have an in-house hotel with spa room cincinnati NHL team.  {That is, not until 2015.}
People make life changes without hockey around that will prevent them from ever returning to the game.  They don t have hockey to distract them, so they ll fill their lives up with other things that become more important than hockey.
The one thing that fans should not have seen at all is the newfound war on Twitter between the NHL and the NHLPA.  Granted, the NBA/NBAPA was more fun to watch.  I actually got a kick out of following the NBAPA account.  It was hilarious and witty.  The NHL/NHLPA battle is just filled with so much bitterness and hate that it really hotel with spa room cincinnati turns people off and we re talking about turning people off from hockey PERMANENTLY.
Both sides are to blame for that.  The NHL should have hired a focus group to talk about how to approach releasing information on the negotiation hotel with spa room cincinnati progress [PROGRESS hotel with spa room cincinnati being the key word here], rather than figure out what are the right trigger words to use for the fans and media.  Trigger words mean nothing when it s apparent that both sides are not negotiating.
If a season is canceled, both sides are to blame for allowing it to happen.  It takes two to make this decision.  While some younger players say that they can play without a CBA in place, that s just foolhardy.  It s a good idea, but unrealistic.
You knew a lockout was coming a long time ago.  Players twiddled their thumbs all summer long and they knew a lockout was coming.  They had these stupid little lunches to talk, but they did not negotiate terms of a new CBA all summer long.  They blame the NHL for that, when they are just as much to blame and the fans know it!
Players wasted everyone s time.  They didn t get their act together.  They lack true leadership.  They fired a guy that could have gotten the talks going before this summer.  The players are just as much to blame for this lockout as the owners are to blame.
As for me, I m not going to Europe next month.  I m going to switch hotel with spa room cincinnati my ticket to Hawaii instead.  I m so turned off by hockey right now.  You can say the straw that broke the camel s back was seeing hotel with spa room cincinnati the player tweets on Twitter regarding the rejection of that 50/50, honor the contracts so-called proposal.  It became the new propaganda.
I was so mad at THE PLAYERS.  They were spreading as much false information as the NHL was to get the fans/media to side with them.  I thought the players said that the fans weren t really a part of this war.  I was mad at the players, because I knew the NHL had a reason for rejecting something like that.  An hour after the players took to Twitter, the NHL explained why and they were just as justified in saying NO to that so-called proposal (that wasn t really a proposal).
I m not big on the propaganda being spewed across Twitter, just like I m not big on the GOP s rape propaganda. hotel with spa room cincinnati Propaganda is literally a huge turnoff, because all propaganda is a way to convince people to believe in X group, even if what they are saying is FALSE and not a good thing.
It s not just the NHL that is turning the fans off, the players are just as responsible for turning fans away.  Many of us are getting really sick of what we re seeing explode onto Twitter.  The Obama vs. Romney debates are more entertaining than the bitterness between the NHLPA and the NHL.  At least both sides of the presidential race are smart men.  I can t say the same for some of the tweets I ve been seeing in regards to the CBA.
The truth is the players are the little itty bitty millionaires (or thousandaires) going up against the guys that make way more money than they do and are smarter than them.  In today s society everybody knows the little guy NEVER wins.  You have to bend.  Look at American politics the only ones winning are the millionaires and billionaires no matter who wins the election.  The ones getting their spleens ripped out of them is the middle class the guys that buy the tickets to your games.
So I m not sure why you think any of us would care about the terms of your CBA or your lack thereof.  It s your battle, not ours.  It s YOUR money, not OURS.  We only care about the end result whether there s hockey or not.
So if you want a season, my dear hockey players, then sit down at the table with the NHL.  If they refuse to do so, then tell them you won t be talking to them or submitting any proposal to them until they agree to sit down and really whip out a CBA with you.  No more wasting time just create progress.
Don t bring the NHL s proposal or the NHLPA s proposal to the fans.  WE DON T CARE.  Just sit down and bang out a CBA together.  It s the only way you re ever going to get a hockey season going.  You waste time with this proposal vs. proposal vs. proposal vs. proposal, just like you did this summer.  Sit down at a table and work out each point together.  You ve already agreed on the 50/50, start from that point and go from there.  Right now, all I see is a lack of communication on both ends.  Learn to communicate with each other and come up with an amicable CBA.
The way this is going, you re losing more and more hockey fans by the day.  Want to change the propaganda around start tweeting hope and nice things instead of this whoa is me crap I m going to go play in Europe and take away a job from some other guy.  Quit being so selfish and work on the CBA with the NHL, quit stealing jobs from other guys.  It doesn t make the fans love you any more when you re stealing jobs from other guys.
Can you imagine how that middle class, blue collar guy would feel if some college hotel with spa room cincinnati kid with a law degree came in and stole his job?  You want to compare yourself with the $50k guys trust me, stealing hotel with spa room cincinnati someone else s job still doesn t bode well with the blue collar guy you want to compare yourself to.

Trip Notes: Took a Friday night Jet Blue red eye flight into JFK. Went strait to my hotel, after I arrived sometime after 5am on Saturday. The hotel was within walking distance to most everything in upper Manhattan. Walked to Penn Station, about a mile, to hop on a bus to go to the Continental Airlines Center (New Jersey Devils) for an afternoon game. Later that night, I took a stroll around upper Manhattan visiting the area around Rockefeller Center, Radio City, and the theatre district. It was a fairly warm evening so the Rockefeller ice rink was a bit slushy flightticket auction from what I could tell. I didn't have my skates so I didn't have a chance flightticket auction to skate. Lots of people were out and about so I didn't flightticket auction feel the least bit worried about walking around the city by myself. Next came a night out on the town. Met up with a friend flightticket auction for a few beers. I can't remember the names of the bars, but I do remember having an amazing time. Had one too many Guinness'. We ended up closing down the bars. Definitely a fun city! Sunday evening I went to an early game at Madison Square flightticket auction Gardens (New York Rangers). It's right next to Penn Station so it was close to the same walk that I made yesterday. Monday flightticket auction morning I got on the subway and took a train to Long Island where I would be going to my last game of the trip.Nassau Coliseum (New York Islanders). After taking a taxi from the train station, I checked into the Marriott Long Island hotel. The hotel was literally located in the parking lot of the arena. It was great having that short of a walk. After the game I went down to the sports bar in the hotel and had a shake to sooth my soar throat. Ended up sitting next to two nice guys who were in town for a teacher's conference. Caught a cab back to the airport Tuesday morning and headed back home. Overall..the trip was a blast. flightticket auction I'd go back to NY in a heart beat!
Arena Notes: After a long bus ride from downtown Manhattan, I reached the Continental Airlines Arena. It was out in the middle of nowhere. It's probably one of the worst arenas I've visited. There wasn't much to it. All levels used the same concourse and shared bathrooms, concessions, etc. so it was very crowded during intermissons. The one bright side, my seat was top level near center ice so I had a great view of the game. I know the box score said there was 17,342 people in attendance, but I find that very hard to believe. It was only around 1/2 way full. It was disapointeing. I expected to see more since they were last years Stanley Cup Champions and they were playing a good team...the Avalanche. But I have to remember, the Devils play a boring defensive game of hockey so I'm not sure I'd pay to go see them play too many games either. The arena opened in 1981 and seats 19,040 flightticket auction hockey fans. Their mascot is NJ Devil a devil. Go figure. ;)
The goal capped a frantic third period flightticket auction that started with the teams deadlocked at 2. The Stanley Cup champions took a 3-2 lead on White's flightticket auction goal at 9:30, only to see Hedjuk pull Colorado even at 13:51. Friesen got the deciding goal 42 seconds flightticket auction later.
Scott Niedermayer, Scott Gomez and Colin White also scored for the Devils, flightticket auction which won its second straight game at home after opening the season 0-3-1 in New Jersey. Martin Brodeur made 20 saves to preserve the win.
Other Game notes: The Devils swapped players on the injured reserve list. New Jersey removed D David Hale, who missed four games with a groin injury, and put RW Grant Marshall on the list with a sore back. ... Tanguay's goal extended his point-scoring streak to eight games.

Hockey's hotels hawaii New Jersey Devils are moving to the Prudential Center, opening hotels hawaii next month in downtown Newark. And basketball's New Jersey Nets are planning to move to a proposed complex in Brooklyn. They have a lease to play at the Continental Airlines Arena until 2012 but can opt out earlier.
George Zoffinger, CEO of the authority, has said the current contract with Continental, which has a major presence at nearby Newark Liberty International Airport, pays $1.3 million annually for its naming rights.
Prudential Financial Inc. will pay $105.3 million over 20 years, for the right to call the Devils' new arena the Prudential Center. The New York Giants and New York Jets are working on naming rights for the stadium they are building next to the arena, expected to open in 2010.
Without a major tenant once the Nets leave, the Continental Airlines Arena, or whatever it becomes known as, faces a difficult road. Maybe New Jersey's own Bruce Springsteen, who christened the place on July 2, 1981, is interested.

When booking travel around the holidays, car rentals can be shockingly expensive. Rentals that are usually about $30 per day often shoot up to $100 per day or more. If you re staying a while, that difference can add up to huge expenses very quickly. If you find yourself in this situation, consider looking for near airport car rentals. Here is an example where I searched for car rentals via Orbitz for a week in Florida around the Christmas holidays. The best price available via this search was from Budget for a total of $608 for the week:
By using Kayak, though, I can easily see car rentals that are available at off-airport locations. In the example shown below, I can rent a car for the week from Enterprise for a total of $245. That s a savings of $363!
The only problem now is that you still need some way to get to and from the rental car agency. If a friend or family member can help, great! hotels in calgary Otherwise, use a tiny fraction hotels in calgary of your savings to pay for a taxi. Also, check directly with the off-airport hotels in calgary rental agency: Once I rented from an agency that had a presence both in the airport and off-site. In that case, I rented from the off-site location, and took a taxi to get there, but dropped off at the airport – all at off-airport rates!  Here are some additional tips thanks to reader Charles McCool:
Enterprise will pick up customers. I know they are not able to pick up at Ft. Lauderdale airport (not sure of other airports). I have not used Enterprise for years. I know someone that takes the first hotel shuttle (or a predetermined hotel shuttle) and has Enterprise meet them there.
Rather hotels in calgary than a taxi, take a local public bus. Or hitch a ride (with a fellow passenger or other transport). Amazing what you can learn just by asking at info desk, talking to airport workers, or asking around baggage hotels in calgary claim.

Had a rental at SNA (off site) where the Avis franchise owner picked me up and dropped me off @ the airport w/no charge. Price for the off site rental was 1/2 what the on site rental would have been.
I just did this in Calgary to save about $150, but interestingly they made me sign something saying I hadn t just come from the airport, so they wouldn t have to charge me more. The rental agent likely knew we had, but I didn t speak up and he didn t push it

I can't help with any destination-specific advice, but two years ago we took our then 6-year old and

My husband and I will be going to Edinburgh for a wedding at the end of August 2013 and would like to spend about 3 weeks in Italy/South of France. We are flying choice hotel group from Melbourne and will probably have to fly with Etihad airways choice hotel group (Milan is their only Italian destination) as I will be spending time with family choice hotel group after the wedding while my husband flies home, then will get a flight home with my parents who will be on holiday in Ireland. (Confusing huh!) I would really like a direct flight into Rome, rather than Milan so will have to work on this part of it and my parents (who like to fly with etihad for the convenience of direct choice hotel group flight to Dublin).
Anyway, back to my question. I had initially wanted to go to the Amalfi coast but it doesn't look like it would be a great idea with my two and a half year old son. We haven't been to Italy before so would like to see Rome, Venice (I know this is also difficult with a stroller so would limit time here to maybe 3 full days) and Tuscany (where we would hire a car). My husband would like to see some of the South of France but not sure where to go or how much time to spend there. Then we would need a flight to Edinburgh so I am guessing Nice would be pretty direct.
We were intending to use trains between cities then hire a car for Tuscany and also when we get into France. Accommodation will be looking into Airbnb for the cities (used it for Paris last year) but would love something beautiful and rustic in Tuscany with gorgeous choice hotel group views.
Everywhere you go will be packed -- and hot -- and it isn't just the steep stairs but the blazing sun that will mean special problems for your toddler in Italy and the south of France. Also consider whether choice hotel group your toddler will be ok in a car on the winding roads of Tuscany.
So if you are not already deterred, I suggest you go where you really want to go, transportation logistics permitting, rather then substitute other places that are equally difficult. If you are arriving in Milan, take a train to Florence, rent a car there and make Tuscany the first part of your stay. Drive the car to Sorrento, drop it off there.
Although the Amalfi coast will be packed, staying in Sorrento or the town of Amalfi has plenty of flat walking area. Use boats to get around rather than buses. Skip Positano, but you can visit the flat town of Amalfi and also see Ravello from there if your toddler can take the winding bus ride. You can take ferries to the islands (Capri, Procida, Ischia) from Sorrento.
After that, go to Rome, and then fly to Nice from Rome. I have no idea how you get to Edinburgh from there. It is also fairly hard to offer advice about the south of France if you have no idea why your husband wants to see it.
There is no advantage to using Airb b in Italy. I suggest you look at booking.com instead, including for your Tuscan stay. You can search by date and budget choice hotel group for rural apartments with kitchens choice hotel group and read reviews. You can also eliminate apartments that don't have air-con choice hotel group or wi-fi or parking, or look specifically for one with a pool and a restaurant.
Any chance your family would be open to visiting fun places like the Belgian coast, Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Stockholm instead? All of them sound so much more appealing to me with a toddler in August in Europe.
PS: I eliminated Venice, but if you would rather go there than the Amalfi, then fly to Milan and take the train, then rent a car and go to Tuscany, then drop off the car in Tuscany (or Orvieto choice hotel group in Umbria) and ake the train to Rome, and ultimately fly to Nice.
If you decide to eliminate the south of France, then consider an itinerary choice hotel group that is fly to Milan, head to Tuscany, head to Sorrento, train to Rome, train to Venice, back to Milan to fly out to Edinburgh.
if you decide to stick with this itinerary, of course you will want a/c in your accommodation and any vehicle, plus shade for the baby, and possibly access to the sea/a swimming pool. you might also like to think of spending rather longer in fewer places - my experience with travelling with young [and not so young] children is that we all had a better time if we slowed down and had a fixed base, rather than touring from one base to another every few days.
so i would suggest picking just 2 places in Italy, and one in France, and using them to see what you can of each area. an apartment on the outskirts of a small town would be nice - shops to brouse around, restaurants to walk to, but easy access to the countryside and other nearby towns without having to worry about negotiating a ZTL.
We just spent 3 weeks in Rome, Florence, and driving in Le Marche, with DS, DDIL, and 26 month-old DGD. The toddler had a great time, and travelled well; she especially liked the trains and buses. We bought a used stroller for the trip, and left it with our last apartment rental owner. Our pace was very slow, and some sights choice hotel group had to be left until "next time." You'll have great memories, choice hotel group wherever you decide to visit. And, happily, you already know how to handle the late-summer heat.
I can't help with any destination-specific advice, but two years ago we took our then 6-year old and 1-year old to the UK for 10 days. We went to Inverness for a funeral and then down to London for about a week.
- Keep your activity list short--like half of what you might normally try to accomplish. We had this dream that my daughter (the 1-year-old) would just nap wherever in her stroller. That didn't happen.
choice hotel group - Wherever you're staying, identify a few take out/take away places nearby. My kids were often either tired and cranky or energized and in need of stuff to do... either way, restaurants were less than ideal.
Thank you all for the advice. I understand it will be hot but coming from Melbourne we are well used to hot days and would be looking choice hotel group forward to some heat in August. @Just27 who did you rent your apartments through?
Goldenautum thanks good advice re go straight to Tuscany choice hotel group for the first part of the journey. We have been to Amsterdam a few times and had considered it for this trip (eliminating south of France) but wanted to see somewhere we haven't been. My husband wanted to see Berlin instead of France but I wasn't sure about it.
Annhig you are right I know we would enjoy it more if we slowed our pace but we also want to try and see a bit since we may not get back to Italy for a few years. Yep we're in the thick of summer choice hotel group here at the moment so no issue.
Thank you for bringing up the issue of luggage. I'm a bit stumped choice hotel group to be honest with what to do with luggage, I know you can store it at airports and major train stations choice hotel group but this would mean having to double back but at this moment I can't see any other option. Which is a bit of a pain
I did an obsessive amount of research (checked TripAdvisor against Slow Travel against VRBO/Home Away; then emailed some of the people who'd written reviews) and rented directly from the owners. The apartments in both Rome and Florence were very toddler-friendly, and in excellent locations for a quick trip back to base, if the need arose.
I choose apartments with a washer dryer, which cuts way down on the amount of luggage you need to schlepp. It's amazing, what fits into a 22" rollie bag, even with a wedding! DGD had a Cares harness for the flights, and we added a car seat to the auto rental.
With luggage - there is obviously so much you have to bring with a baby. In our experience we had 2 rolling suitcases, a cabin bag that you can thread over the handle of a rolling suitcase (in Oz the Qantas brand of luggage does these), choice hotel group and at the beginning of the trip we flat-packed a backpack which we used as a nappy bag during the trip. By the end of the trip we had accumulated enough stuff that we used it as another bag. The person with the pram wears the backpack, with hands free to attend to the pram / child, while the other person manhandles the suitcases. It worked for us quite well, and you still come in under the luggage allowance.
We also used a very light stroller ($20 from Toys R Us) so that it would be easy to handle with one hand when closed and if it broke while in transit we would not worry. That combination choice hotel group of luggage will do you for a month, especially if you have an apartment and will do laundry. We had a car when our child was very young but as she got older, also used trains, and the luggage still worked for us.
Also you are probably wondering about transporting nappies, which take up a lot of space. I read a tip on Fodors once where one family used to unpack the nappies and repack them in the suitcase wherever there was a gap. I've never tried it but it seems sensible. Remember to take quite a few in the cabin bag just in case because you can't rely on cabin crew having your size if you run out!
I think we will try and take just 1 suitcase and send a bit with my parents who will be going to Ireland at the same time. My son is on his way to being toilet trained so hopefully will be down to just nights in nappies when we go. Totally choice hotel group agree on apartments with washing facilities that is definitely the way to go!!
We are tossing up the option of going to Italy after the wedding in Edinburgh which will be on 31st August but will need to be back in Ireland for my brothers birthday choice hotel group middle of September. So that leaves just two weeks but after the advice on here re how busy Italy is in August might be better.
So if we fly into Milan on the 2nd September (not a city I want to really see) go straight choice hotel group to Venice for 3 nights dependant on what time the flight choice hotel group arrives, I know we will be a bit jet-lagged, but I'm used to getting little sleep being the mother of a 2 year old!!
Hire a car for Tuscany choice hotel group stay 4 nights (I am guessing get a train to somewhere choice hotel group outside Florence to hire the car? Any recommendations?) also recommendations on where to base ourselves would be greatly received. (My son loves the car and is very happy to do winding drives as long as there is scenery and will take lovely long naps while we drive also!!)
There is no need to fly to Milan in orde

Enterprise in downtown Chicago asked me what my insurance deductible was, too. I told the man, None

Bird rented a Lincoln rental car in orlando florida Towncar from Budget at the Toronto Airport in April. No one offered to do a pre-rental walkaround, and no one was available to inspect the car, he says. They just handed him the keys.
Several weeks later, I received an envelope from Budget. Enclosed was an estimate for a new tire, and a copy of a credit card billing for the new tire, charged against my credit card, for a total of $154. I did not receive a cover letter or anything rental car in orlando florida to explain what happened, rental car in orlando florida or why they charged rental car in orlando florida my credit card.
Bird maintains that there was no damage to the car and that Budget sent the wrong customer the bill. Indeed, the mileage and rental rate didn t match his, and he can t see his own signature on the bill Budget rental car in orlando florida provided.
I don t know what will happen to Bird s case, but if he s still pushing rental car in orlando florida for justice 17 years later, rental car in orlando florida I have to assume there are others. rental car in orlando florida It only takes a few to make this the car rental industry s worst nightmare in 2013.
Whether or not they have a major problem, they certainly aren t doing themselves any favors by continuing to do things like file damage claims rental car in orlando florida well after turn in, or not taking high-resolution pictures of every car before it leaves the lot.
I found it hard to really vote on this one. Does the American car rental industry have a repair fraud problem? I don t think the car rental industry itself has a problem. From what I have read on here, it is just one, Enterprise, rental car in orlando florida with a corporate wide problem and several franchises that are causing the problems. I m just hoping in the end, something is done, and quick, about this.
I m not sure it is strictly the rental car companies themselves, but their franchisees, some of whom are less than scrupulous and trying to recoup whatever they can from whomever they can soak for the so-called damage.
But I still prepare for problems I never choose rental car in orlando florida a car that has damage and when I return the car, I take a half dozen digital pictures rental car in orlando florida of the car, at every angle and especially the windshield. Because I ve learned from reading your columns that mistakes happen (intentional or otherwise, I m not saying). Be prepared.
I encountered rental car in orlando florida a very enthusiastic rental car in orlando florida young lady working at a rental company I no longer use at all costs. While I was picking up the car and she was trying to upsell me the ridiculous insurance, she kept asking me what my deductible rental car in orlando florida was. I told her You don t need to know that. She became increasingly frustrated with me and even at one point told me I couldn t have the car until I gave her this information. rental car in orlando florida I finally said, It s enough rental car in orlando florida for me to know and you not to worry about, sweetness.
You have to wonder, with today s technology, why the rental car companies haven t installed some sort of camera system to take pictures of the cars as they leave the lot. If the police department can install cameras at traffic lights . . . You d have to think its because they would lose a lot of ancillary income. It was mentioned in a recent Elliot article that the airlines is not a profit- making business rental car in orlando florida model. Looks like neither is the car rental business.
Years ago, I had a rental car from Holiday Car Rental. The windshield had a pressure crack while the car was in my possession. The car was parked when it happened. They wouldn t talk about it and I wasn t equipped to pursue it further at the time, but I can tell you that their business, their owners business and their suppliers have lost thousands of dollars over this $200 event.
I rent only four or five times a year, year after year, and usually from Hertz. rental car in orlando florida They have told me on more than one occasion, We do not nickel and dime you to death. When I ask about an inspection, they cheerfully agree to accompany me on a walk-around. I am not dinged (pun intended) by harassing post-rental charges.
What I have complained about recently are the aged cars I get, the last one being two years old with over 46,000 miles. Post-rental, I told them orally and in writing that my expectations were better than a Rent-a-wreck.
My brother in law had rented a car a few years ago, not sure which company, and got a bill for about $500, he fought it and the company pretty quickly and quietly went away. I must admit that my distrust of the car rental companies makes me consider vacation options that do not include car rental when possible.
If I can possibly avoid renting a car nowadays, I will. It makes little difference to me who is at fault for these outrages, either the parent company or the franchisee. Any parent company that so sloppily selects its franchisees, risks tarnishing the entire brand. When I complained to the parent company of the Payless brand a few years ago about the antics of its Las Vegas airport franchise, I was brushed off with the so-called explanation that its franchisees are independent operators and, by inference, therefore not accountable to the parent company. As if such an answer explains it. I haven t rented from any Payless brand since.
Enterprise in downtown Chicago asked me what my insurance deductible was, too. I told the man, None of your business! It is fair that they know who you have insurance coverage with, but your financials are off limits! When we walked out to the car, I pulled out my phone and photographed rental car in orlando florida every square inch of the car. What a horrible feeling thinking that the company you are doing business is looking for a way to scam you! I also told the young man he d be smart to find a more honorable business to be in. Photograph your rental rental car in orlando florida car, people! (And, I m sticking with Hertz!)
I was just alerting everyone to the fact that I have a second post scheduled for noon today. rental car in orlando florida It s the long-awaited interview rental car in orlando florida with Delta s Allison Ausband. rental car in orlando florida It has nothing to do with Budget or with rental cars.
The car rental industry in America seems to have built its business model around fraudulent repair charges. Whether that s the corporations or the franchisees, the car renters are the ones who get hit with those charges.
I hope the US follows suit, just three weeks ago I believe enterprise tried to scam me out of some existing damage claim revenue. I rented a car while mine was in the shop and picked it up early one morning before work at 730am. It was still dark out and it was a damp morning, and they parked the car so that one side was hidden up against their parking lot sign. Like I always do, I pulled out my iPhone and took a video as I walked around the car looking for damage. I did my best to get a video of the hidden side but it was hard to get to. I signed rental car in orlando florida no damage and was on my way to work. At lunch, I came out to the car and BAM three huge scratches near the top of the door and a small dent on the side that was hidden from view when we inspected the car. The paint was chipped and the damage was obvious. I pulled out my phone in a panic to review the video and by some miracle you could faintly see something on the tape that showed something.
I called up the Enterprise yard and spoke with the agent and told them what happened. I went almost immediately rental car in orlando florida to the enterprise yard and talked to the agent. He didn t even want to see the video. They just marked the damage on the rental agreement and sent me on my way. It was easy, perhaps too easy, this was a 2012 car with few miles and they signed off on it like it was nothing. I truly feel they knew about the damage and thought they could charge me for it when I returned the car.
It s the same reason they only do inspections upon return, it s in their best interest to do it upon returns. If there was a previous scratch they will charge you upon return rental car in orlando florida if it wasn t noted. There s a high likelyhood that people won t challenge the claim so they get more revenue for the same scratch. If it does get challenged, they can quietly go away. They have to know this is happening.
I do agree that Hertz, rental car in orlando florida while being a little more expensive than most other agencies, I ve heard far far fewer complaints than with other companies. Also, hertz has a policy of light scratches (under 2-3 inches) not being charged or noted and they also note existing damage with a white dot or red dot of paint on the car near the scratch so it shows that it was previously recorded.
One of these days there will be a revolt , people will rent for a day with full insurance and return cars with scratches, dents cracked rental car in orlando florida windshields, flat tires etc. All the small things the car rental companies are pulling off. Then there might be changes
It s when they do go away easily that you REALLY need to be suspicious. rental car in orlando florida If it is legit and they had somebody dead-to-rights they don t just give up. But if they re systematically floating bogus bills just hoping people will pay without question, then it s in their best interest rental car in orlando florida to just drop it when somebody fights. Way easier to just send another bogus bill to somebody who might quietly pay than get ensnared in a dispute that might cause them troubles.
Although I understand rental car in orlando florida your point I have been able to check with people who know about windshields. A pressure crack is caused by an improper rental car in orlando florida installation from what I m told, so although the renter is responsible from what I understand, this would be easy to prove otherwise. If the engine falls out of the car when you drive out of the lot, are you going to pay? I won t.
My last rental had 6 miles on the odo. As in single digit mileage, in case someone thinks I didn t type it completely out. I was completely surprised. I thought it might have been the trip odometer, but I fiddled around with the display, and it was 6 miles.
I have never had Hertz or Avis try to charge me with per-existing or fake damage. That seems to only happen with Dollar and Enterprise. Multiple rental car in orlando florida times I have had Hertz bill me later for gas, when I returned rental car in orlando florida the vehicle full (I always keep the gas receipt). And I have had Both Hertz and Avis one time each give me cars that broke down within minutes of leaving the lot. Avis immediately came out with a new car and swapped it out, Hertz scratched their heads and refused to do anything

I love the sounds in an airport. I like the sounds of baggage wheels clacking on the moving sidewalk

As I write this, I am on the train to Narita International Airport, and it is all I can do to keep from vibrating out of my skin in excitement. In a few hours, I'll board a plane bound for Washington, DC via Chicago. It will be the first time I've been home in almost a year and a half, and though my emotions are bordering on ecstasy because of the reunions that are just over the horizon, a good portion of my happiness comes from the fact that I'm in an airport at all.
See, airports are my happy place. I'm in love with them. I'm the woman who shows up at least three hours before her flight international or domestic, it doesn t matter just to spend a bit of extra time in the terminal. I could spend the entire day there and wouldn't get bored once.
I love the anonymity I'm afforded in an airport. Aside from the security staff leafing through my passport and scanning my boarding pass, no one knows who I am. No one has any idea where I'm going and why. I could be anyone exotic car rental los angeles in an airport. I usually travel alone, so despite exotic car rental los angeles the fact that people surround me, I always feel a certain measure of privacy. I'm guilty of turning off my phone right after I've cleared security; I like being cut off and unreachable. An airport gives me freedom from dealing with everyday nuisances and annoyances exotic car rental los angeles that are otherwise always present.
For me, there's hardly a better place to people watch. Peruse the crowds at an airport, especially if it's international, and you're guaranteed to see a huge range of races, nationalities, and social classes. I'd once spent an hour in Heathrow sitting between a Hasidic Jew and a sunny surfer who looked like he could have been Matthew McConaughey's exotic car rental los angeles younger brother. Airports are melting pots.
And I think you can get a basic sense of a person's character when they're at an airport, too. Do they travel in comfort, wearing jeans and a t-shirt? Or are they all business, wearing heels or a suit? Are they quietly reading on a bank of chairs against the gate windows? Or are they typing away on a laptop, trying to get one last work email sent off before they board the plane? Sucking down a venti latte from Starbucks? Or snacking on a sandwich they made themselves and brought from home? (For the record, I'm the chick who alternately does yoga in quiet corners during layovers, guiltlessly chows down on an overpriced, huge burger, or catches up on reading comics on her iPad.)
I love the sounds in an airport. I like the sounds of baggage wheels clacking on the moving sidewalk, a boarding pass being torn off, and my passport being stamped. All of those are comforting reminders that I am either almost home or soon to be somewhere new and exciting. (And there's rarely a screaming baby in an airport. You usually have to get on a plane to enjoy that.)
But the best part about airports lies in what they symbolize. Airports are places of bookends: new beginnings and long-awaited endings, arrivals and departures, hellos and goodbyes. We start in one city to end in another exotic car rental los angeles hundreds or thousand miles away. You enter from a desert and exit into a blizzard. In from winter, out into summer. In from familiarity, out into something completely foreign. Or vice versa.
An airport is a place of transit, and not just geographically. I wish there was some sort of time-lapse to show how people change between departures and arrivals. When I arrive back home from being away, I'm never the same person as when I left.
And the emotions at an airport… you've got the whole range. You want to see human emotion at its most sentimental and raw? Watch families reunite at Arrivals. Watch them separate before security outside of Departures. Emotions converge on each other; the pain of goodbyes and last moments are mixed with anticipation and excitement. The heyday of an arrival is tempered by the comforting feeling that you are finally home again. I've gotten the stereotypical, romantic "I love you" when boarding a plane. The knowledge that soon there will be thousands of miles between you and your loved ones makes those moments all the more significant. Airports can cut you deep. But the fantastic thing about them is that as much as they are host to those moments, they're also the places to flee from them. As soon as you step into an airport, a whole new chapter begins.
