Hi Linda: The folks at HomeAway.co.uk were absolutely wonderful to work with and they have literally

After years of working 70 hours a week at jobs I detested, I felt like the proverbial "hole in the donut" - solid on the outside, but empty on the inside. Searching for meaning in my life, I abandoned my successful but unsatisfying career and set out on a six-month solo backpacking trip around the world to pursue my true passions of travel, writing, and photography. My blog features stories about the destinations I visit, people I meet, the crazy things... Read more here....
It didn t have a great view. I slept on a click-clack sofa bed that was little more than an Ikea futon and the kitchen was the size of a postage stamp. But the location of my little vacation rental apartment in Paris more than made up for its minor shortcomings.
The longer I travel, the more I strive to connect with the culture of every destination I visit. luxury hotels michigan One of my secrets for accomplishing this has always been to haunt coffee houses, where I meet locals rather than other tourists. luxury hotels michigan On this trip to France, I added a new weapon to my arsenal when I accepted an offer from HomeAway.co.uk, the UK s number one holiday rentals site. HomeAway connects private property owners with vacationers around the world who enjoy the freedom and value of a holiday rental home over a hotel. I jumped at the chance when they offered to put me up in  an apartment located in a residential Paris neighborhood, where I would be more likely to have a local experience.
In addition to providing me entry into the local scene, staying in an apartment with a fully-equipped kitchen meant saving on meals. Within easy walking distance I found a neighborhood shop where fresh fruits were polished and stacked high. Close by was a neighborhood grocer where I picked luxury hotels michigan up French Brie, a robust gourmet olive oil, and black olive tapenade. Each morning I followed the delicious yeasty aroma of fresh baked bread to a local bakery and carried home a traditional baguette, still warm from the oven. After stuffing my face with these French specialties each morning, I walked two blocks to the Metro, which whisked me to any of Paris famous sights for €1.9 (Euros).
When my brain (or my feet) couldn t take any more, I returned to the 9th district and plopped down in a cafe for coffee and conversation with Parisians who were unwinding after work. Fortunately, luxury hotels michigan there were no lack of choices. My apartment was located in the heart of Paris between Montmartre and the Louvre, an area teeming with theaters, restaurants, retail stores and, of course, the requisite coffee shops. A restaurant kitty-corner luxury hotels michigan from my apartment served the best apple crumble I ve ever tasted and the owner of a Tabac one block away whipped me up a fantastic salad with roasted vegetables one Saturday afternoon when I took a break from cooking.
With all that vacation apartment rentals offer, I expected the price to be high. I had unknowingly arrived in Paris during fashion week, one day before my apartment rental reservation began, so I had to find a hotel room for one night. Despite searching for hours, the best rate I could find was €160 (about $218 USD) per night. Choke! The following day I hot-footed it to my apartment, which was priced at a very affordable €69 per night or €450 per week ($94 USD per night, $612 USD per week). Comfortable and affordable accommodations with lightning speed wifi, located in a non-touristy neighborhood now that s a combination that just can t be beat. I ll definitely be adding apartments to my accommodations mix in the future.
HomeAway.co.uk kindly hosted my stay in Paris, however the receipt and acceptance of complimentary items or services will never influence the content, topics, or posts in this blog. I write the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth

luxury hotels michigan Oh but I will definitely be bookmarking his for future reference ..France seems to be calling me at the moment, you know how everytime you log on the same destination comes up, as if the universe is trying to tempt you to come?
Hi Linda: The folks at HomeAway.co.uk were absolutely wonderful to work with and they have literally thousands of properties in France, luxury hotels michigan across all price ranges. I m sure you ll be able to find something that s affordable and well located.
An apartment is the only way to go when in Paris! Sure, a 4* hotel can be nice, but you PAY PAY PAY. Not to say that all apartments are cheap not the case at all. But I feel like you get the real Paris experience when you have a little kitchen and place to call your own. Lovely little space! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Diane: As you say, apartments run the gamut of price ranges in France, but they did offer some of the most affordable accommodations I found in Paris. And I SO enjoyed having a place that felt more like a home than a sterile, characterless hotel room.
Always stayed at hotels while visiting Paris. I am over that! I want to stay in a cute little apartment and pretend I am French. Love Paris and haven t been in years, I should visit more often, specially since one of my best friends lives in Versailles.
Andy and I really love renting apartments when we travel, especially if we stay in one place for more than a couple nights. It s nice to have the option to cook, even if we don t use it. It s more spacious. And I really enjoy having more of a local experience. I m glad you enjoyed it!
I travel solo, as you know Jessie, but having now stayed in a vacation rental apartment I can easily imagine how much nicer these types of accommodations would be for a family. Room to move around, more privacy, a way to prepare your own meals, etc.
Well you KNOW that apartments are OUR favorite way to travel whether it is here in Europe or in Australia or New Zealand. All of those apartments over the years have really contributed to our enjoyment of each place. I was so happy to read that you had such a wonderful time in Paris!
When I was in Europe I was a big fan of apartments and less of hotels. You have privacy, kitchen plus all the other utilities, a feeling that you belong there, and you save considerably if you travel with other people
Hi Barbara, I love your blog which I just discovered through Facebook ..I am also a solo traveller woman and like you always on a tight budget so I appreciate a lot all of your tips .I am a venezuelan lady of 60 years old ..Thanks a lot for sharing all your experience
So glad I found this, I m actually looking for an apt to stay in when we visit Paris in April. My husband will be working out of his company s Paris office for a week which is actually in the 9th so that apt looks perfect. Could you share the link to that apartment?
Hi Cassie: I rented through HomeAway.co.uk. Just now I went to their site to find a link for you and it doesn t appear to be listed on their site. It s a property owned by Bellboy Apartments, named Opera Bohemia. I seem to remember luxury hotels michigan that it was not listed at the time that HomeAway arranged for me to stay in it, so perhaps try contacting them and explaining that you saw the review on my site, etc. If it truly is no longer available, I m sure you can find a similar property for a like price. HomeAway literally has thousands of apartments in Paris. Best of luck.
You really had a great time in Paris. I also love becoming like a local in places I go to instead of being a tourist. Becoming a local would be enjoying the place more while not actually compelling you to spend much just like any tourist. It also helps you discover more valuable things in that place.
Hi Tom: There are, of course, iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre that I felt I HAD to see, but the best times are just striking up friendships with locals and wandering the streets of various neighborhoods that are not touristy.
luxury hotels michigan Paris seems to be in the air Springtime in Paris, and all that After 2 1/2 weeks of family travel in England and France coming up, I will be set free in Limoges the last week of March. I am in a great state of flux on what to do (also solo traveller) luxury hotels michigan I fly back to Seattle 4 days later from Orly. Have never been to Paris and was overwhelmed by all the choices of neighborhoods to rent an apartment. (Oh, and apt. rental is the way to go! Not only HomeAway but also VRBO and a host of others. Spent 3 weeks in Spain and Portugal in apartments. Only drawback is that most of them require a minimum of 3 or 4 nights stay.) luxury hotels michigan Anyway, I can t seem to make up my mind about taking trains to a few places along the way from Limoges or just hightail it to Paris using it as a base, and then take a train to say, Chartres, as a day trip. How many days were you in Paris? I m wondering if 4 nights, 3 full days, are going to be too long. I like to feel a place more than doing all the tourist luxury hotels michigan sights. luxury hotels michigan Mona Lisa is not high on my list! ; ) What do you think based on your time there. I am also a budget traveler and over 60 (yay for Senior Discounts!).
Vivian, I can t imagine that four days would be too long in Paris. I spent two weeks there and still didn t do everything I wanted to do. In the unlikely event that you grow tired of Paris during your four days, the trains make it easy to do day trips to places like Versaille Palace, Monet s Garden, CChartres, and the Normandy Beaches/Caen.
Romance is actually something you cannot put off or schedule; however, what you can schedule are the dates. Make time for each other, no matter how short it may be. Schedule dates ahead of time and make sure to make no other commitments. Take this time to enjoy each other s company. It s not a crime to take a break from talking about work problems or family issues. luxury hotels michigan After all, a little breather is what you need to refresh yourself and your relationship.
Wow! How cool is that? I love that little apartment. I think y

Last month's episode of "The Simpsons" experiencing delicious Ethiopian cuisine at an imaginary restaurant in Los Angeles was popular among Ethiopians on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and elsewhere. (Above image: From The Simpsons "The Food Wife" episode)
New York (TADIAS) It is not everyday that we encounter cheap seattle hotels a positive portrayal of Ethiopian culture in Western comedy and literature. So it was refreshing to see the recent episode of The Simpsons, one of America s favorite animated-cartoon family sharing cheap seattle hotels a meal at a fictional restaurant in L.A s Little Ethiopia. The segment, which aired in November, was a hit among Ethiopians who tweeted and posted a portion of the episode in social media circles.
"I saw the clips on YouTube and it was great, said Leelai Demoz, an Ethiopian-American Academy Award-nominated television and film producer. Mr. Demoz said he was impressed by the due diligence that went into creating the neighborhood and cultural scenes. "I thought it was a very well done clip by someone who has obviously spent a lot of time in Little Ethiopia," he enthused.
"We are so happy because The Simpsons put on the map not only this neighborhood, but also our food and culture in general," Woizero Negest said. "As a matter of fact we are writing a thank you letter to the them." She added. "We want to invite them back for a coffee ceremony."
Chef Marcus Samuelsson blogged: We love it when we see Ethiopian culture injected cheap seattle hotels into pop culture." He added, "The episode was accurate in finding traditional Ethiopian music and also highlighting the custom of gursha where Ethiopians lovingly cheap seattle hotels offer food to one another.
The Simpsons adventure starts when their car breaks down in Little Ethiopia, the stretch of Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles between Olympic and Pico Boulevards. The area is lined with Ethiopian businesses and restaurants. Luckily cheap seattle hotels for them, their car malfunctions right across from an eatery. Initially Marge (the mother) is visibly concerned. But she has no choice but to follow her hungry kids (Bart and Lisa) into a restaurant. The reluctant mom was still uncomfortable with the milieu of the Ethiopian restaurant such as its display of CDs for sale. The humor does not stop there. Soon enough her taste buds will be dancing eskista while eating some delicious-looking traditional Ethiopian food served on a large platter. Holy casserole-y! says Marge. That s good gloop! Bart agrees with his mother: I wish I lived in Ethiopia. But Lisa is the most descriptive. Exotic, vegetarian, cheap seattle hotels I can mention it in a college essay, she says. Mom, this is amazing!
Mr. Demoz said when done right animated shows are powerful tools for creative and entertaining expression of social messages, but they are also hard work. "With animation you have so much freedom to express oneself, that the taste buds dancing seems like a logical cheap seattle hotels and normal thing to see," Mr. Demoz said. "I have never worked in that form so I am in awe of their talents. I have spent time with animators on a TV show and I can tell you that what seemed like a short three minute cheap seattle hotels clip, took months cheap seattle hotels and months to execute."
It really is a sign of the times that social media has made this little 3 min clip the topic of discussion for a couple weeks. From peers to family members everyone had seen it and it was something to brag about. It is amazing.
It is an excellent piece and an accurate portrayal. I showed the episode in my class and all my students liked it. Thank you the Simpson cheap seattle hotels for such a wonderful job! I also thank those Ethiopians who worked hard to create such a positive image. It is a product of hardworking and dedicated Ethiopians.
this is a great start to showing the good things about ethiopia . I love it. For too long american society recycles all the past images and didnt bother to take a deeper look at the people and culture. God Bless Ethiopia.

Whether you eat it in Ethiopia or here in the D.C. area, soak it the doro wat with some hearty injer

What's so special about doro wat -- the chicken stew served by just about every Ethiopian restaurant around here? For us, it's the stew's heady sauce of red hot pepper and peppery ginger, blended with a dozen other spices, heated and working in harmony, and pounded into a paste called Berberé. It lingers on the tongue. Iit doesn't seem very hot until after you swallow, when a pleasant slow burn slides all the way down.
In the now-out-of-print Recipes: African Cooking (Foods of the World) , deceased South African author and ancient culture guru Laurens van der Post extolled the virtues of Ethiopian cuisine in 1970, well before wars and famine branded a lingering sterotype of Ethiopians into the American uganda tourism and travel consciousness.
Specifically, van der Post was particularly enamored of the complexity of Berberé -- a blend of ginger, cardamom, coriander, fenugreek, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, onions, garlic, wine, salt, paprika, red pepper, black pepper, and water. The spices are toasted, blended with the onions and garlic and boiled down with wine and water until the mixture becomes a thick paste. Van der Post called Berberé "the pivot of Ethiopian cuisine ... the universal seasoning for everything from a rich man's delicacy to a poor man's chunk of bread." It is what sofrito is to Puerto Rican cuisine. And it is showcased well when combined with chicken, hard-boiled eggs, and more spices and stewed uganda tourism and travel and turned into doro wat.
The stew is the country's national uganda tourism and travel dish and a holiday treat for Ethiopians today. Historically, making doro wat was a very serious business, and it remains so in rural areas. uganda tourism and travel If a prospective bride doesn't make the stew properly, the wedding may be called off, says Elias Wondimu, uganda tourism and travel an Ethiopian ex-pat who now runs a publishing business in Los Angeles and is a frequent patron of D.C. and L.A.'s Ethiopian restaurants. According to Wondimu, the bride-to-be is expected to work in her in-laws' kitchen over the course of three days killing the chicken, draining uganda tourism and travel it, plucking and chopping it just so before uganda tourism and travel adding it to the spice mix already simmering in the pot.
Whether you eat it in Ethiopia or here in the D.C. area, soak it the doro wat with some hearty injera bread -- a large, spongy pancake uganda tourism and travel of bread that tastes similar to lightly fermented buckwheat. And here are a couple of our favorite places in D.C to eat doro wat, prepared under far less stressful and antiquated conditions:
The exodus of good Ethiopian places away from 18th street is alarming...Red Sea and Addis Ababa are sorely uganda tourism and travel missed, especially the basement of the latter (where am I going to watch the World Cup this year?!?). uganda tourism and travel Meskerem is just too much of a theme park for Fodor's-reading Shoreham/Wardman Park/Hilton guests, and Awash is so-so. Wah.
Metrocurean, I agree that that is a tired joke, however, as anyone like me who was a child of the 80's can tell you, we spent a lot of time getting the idea pounded into our heads that all Ethiopians were, like, crazy starving. It was thus a bit of a surprise to find out that it has a very rich food culture.

WASHINGTON When Ethiopian immigrants started arriving in the 1970s, 18th Street in Adams Morgan neighborhood was their first home. Then when prices went up, the community had to find a new place. The U Street corridor, an area that was largely abandoned, was perfect for a new community. They revived it with their restaurants and stores, and it became Little Ethiopia, with its heart beating at the intersection with 9th Street.
Dereje Desta is the publisher and editor of Zethiopia, the leading publication among the Ethiopian community in the metro area. For one morning, he became a guide to journalism students to help them immerse in the community and learn what "Little Ethiopia" means beyond the intersection of two streets with more than two dozen Ethiopian-owned businesses.
Washington discount coupons for car rentals D.C. is home for the largest Ethiopian community in the country. Other large communities are in Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Seattle and Atlanta. As Selam Mulugeta, office assistant for Congressman Mike Honda, chair and founder of the Ethiopian American Congressional Caucus described, discount coupons for car rentals churches and Ethiopian-owned businesses help authorities locate this community all over the country. And most of them are in the nation's capital.
The number of Ethiopian citizens in the Washington, D.C. metro area varies all the time and no one has exact data on this population. According to the Ethiopian Embassy estimates, discount coupons for car rentals around 200,000 citizens in the metro area are of Ethiopian discount coupons for car rentals descent. The Ethiopian Community Center estimates around 150,000 people from the African discount coupons for car rentals country.

According to Desta, most Ethiopians consider that they are very well integrated in American society. discount coupons for car rentals The interaction between discount coupons for car rentals Ethiopians and Americans is not only limited to locals admiration of Ethiopian restaurants.
The Ethiopian community is very well integrated in the American culture because of all the business owned by Ethiopians and also because they work with Americans discount coupons for car rentals in other fields, said Hermela Kebede, executive director discount coupons for car rentals of the Ethiopian Community Center in Washington, D.C.
However, Ethiopians are waiting to see how the community evolves, as they are in the middle of a transition between the first generation of immigrants and their American-born children, who are now graduating from college.
Ethiopians have been traditionally known to work as cab drivers in the area. Even though there is an extended number of them who still do 11 percent of employed Ethiopians in the year 2000 were taxi drivers, according to Shaller Consulting. Many also hold jobs as university professors or accountants.
We have also become wiser after living here for a while, Desta reflects after showing an Ethiopian-owned Italian Restaurant. La Carbonara the name of an Italian pasta recipe emerges right next to the Mexican restaurant El Sol, also an Ethiopian property. After some years in the restaurant business, Ethiopian immigrants are now renting their properties to run other kinds of businesses, Desta explained.
Some Ethiopian discount coupons for car rentals shops display Barack Obama's campaign message, Yes, We Can, in their windows. It is, after all, something that applies to what many Ethiopian want to say about their community and their younger generation. They want to continue discount coupons for car rentals to prosper and thrive.
I read in Washington Post there were 31,000 Ethiopians in the DC area. Now it is 200,000. Do people have problems with numbers? How can you get 200,000 or 150,000 out of a census of 31,000. I just hate wrong information, best wishes to you all from my native land.
Juz to calrify things for you the Ethiopian discount coupons for car rentals population in and around DC is 200K. The total number of guests who came to attend the ESFNA tournament are 31-32K. So there is no wrong information. Only a bit of ClArIfIcAtIoN will do the trick .:)
I noticed white business owners seem to wait for Ethiopians to clean up and popularize an area before they move in for the kill. Like they did in the 18th street area. I am afraid it will not be long before they are pushed out from the little discount coupons for car rentals Ethiopia center again.
It doesn't matter how many Ethiopians live around Washington dc as long as we dont make no diffrence using our significant number. There are only a few Ethiopians who are restlessly working to fight the weyane regime; the others are just selfish combination of population that only works for them selves. In addition to that most of us seem to be proud of our history including having a country never been colonized, having a county men and women who had fought and defeated the Italian invaders, having a country of rich of culture…..we discount coupons for car rentals tend to be proud of the good things while we don't to join with those who want to bring the good things for our country. I mean we have always proud of the past while we should've ashamed of our current situation in Ethiopia. We have always feel proud to admire what was done by our grand, grand fathers while we don't want to do or contribute nothing for our current crises including fighting the major Ethiopian enemy weyane. So, I urge all the Ethiopians in Diaspora to stop feeling proud by what we haven't done, of course was done by our previous generation and start to step up and contribute our own part especially fighting the weyane regime which is the cause of our complex discount coupons for car rentals problem including famine, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, unemployment and in general lack of democracy that is all in all comes from bad governing system of weyane regime. So let's start asking our selves what have I done to prevent the weyane up coming atrocities rather than fooling our selves with the past history. I still admire and give a big place for our fathers and mothers who had given us Ethiopia with its optimum sovereignty. While we still keep watching the crimes of weyane including giving of our country land that was protected by the blood of many Ethiopians to a neighborhood country. Curently Ethiopia is in a shape that tend to turn out as somalia while we feel prestigious about ethiopia. I rather simply say…..SHAME ON US …who are not taking steps to fight weyane……
I think clustering around DC is a form of separation anxiety. The US has many other states, I don t know why you have to be in one are until everyone feels like you are taking their jobs and neighborhoods, venture out and see what s up. As for me, DC is just too much abesha, it s like yemender nuro, but yimechachihu.

I thought I'd be nice to set things off with a hit, recognizable song about California. I got it at

Welcome to Artbound 's new music series Hear and Now, where we explore songs with a sense of place. The idea is simple: put Southern California musicians in the locations that inspired a song, and document a performance of the song, in that place. Through this juxtaposition, Hear and Now aims to paint a rich, multidimensional portrait of the creative process and draw connections between musical inspiration and the environment that nurtures it. Look closer. Listen in.
Six songs. Five locations. One day. For this installment of Hear and Now, we commissioned DJ Cut Chemist to make a mix for our city; a collection of songs that represented a few of the many neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Then during one crazy day, we drove across town, setting up guerrilla performances in each of these locations.
We started in the heart of Los Angeles, downtown, nestled in a snarl of our arterial freeways, and headed west, down Wilshire Blvd., that linear city lined with skyscrapers all the way to the Pacific. From day break to sun down, we explored a fraction of this sprawling city -- just one road among many - but witnessed the way L.A. neighborhoods blend together, the same way the sound of two records becomes blurred and interwoven by a DJ's mixer. As the sun tucked behind the ocean, in an almost post-card-ish, "Endless Summer" kind of sunsets, we had half the city behind us, leaving us with memories of pineapple paletas at MacArthur Park, burning sage in Little Ethiopia, parking tickets downtown, and the never-ending bustle of Venice Beach. Songs for our city. Enjoy.
I get the many facets of Los Angeles airline fares in a day. From downtown to MacArthur Park to Little Ethiopia to Venice Beach to Santa Monica beach, there's so many different ethnicities in this city. It's such a melting pot and such different landscapes. It's almost like being inside a different city every day. For me, being an Angeleno all of my life, I definitely wanted to show how that impacted my art over the years, being in Ozomatli and doing stuff on my own, going to school here. I'll always live here. I was born here. I'm fascinated with this city. This piece definitely illustrates that for me.
I thought I'd be nice to set things off with a hit, recognizable song about California. I got it at a parking lot sale in the 80's. "California Soul" is a hit song that got remade by a lot of people. airline fares Her version got sampled by a famous hip-hop airline fares group called Gang Starr, the song was "Check the Technique." So it had some hip-hop relevance airline fares as well as relevance to California, so that's why I chose it.
It's a cumbia record on Fuentes, which is a label. Colombian cumbia is my favorite right now. There's a strong Latin community in Los Angeles and I thought I would share it in a location that would probably have a strong Colombian community, like the MacArthur Park area.
It's cool. Seeing people be affected by street art is always something that has intrigued me and street theater. It goes back to the Sun-Ra approach which is that music can and should happen anywhere. Art could and should happen anywhere. Sometimes it's annoying to people. Sometimes it's a nuisance. Sometimes it's pleasant. To see people are affected one way or another; that's what I like. [Later in the day at Venice Beach] people acted like, "this is affecting me but I'm not going to let people know." They were like "I'm just going to go about my business and act like its not even happening." That's a weird reaction to spontaneous street art.
I thought it was, particularly to see you perform at a park, where it really interacted with the public. It was fun to see how random people were starting to dance and get into it, even walking into the shots!
Merkato is my favorite airline fares Ethiopian restaurant in Little Ethiopia, in L.A. I wanted to explore a little bit of the mix called "The Sound of the Police," [which premiered airline fares as a prelude to Mulatu Astatke's 2010 L.A. performance]. That was a reenactment of a section of that mix. I wanted to demonstrate my love for Ethiopian music. It's probably one of my favorite styles of music for the last seven years. It was cool being in Merkato playing that stuff and watching the management bug out because I'm not Ethiopian airline fares and you know that's such a closed community. I think a lot of those times probably, I wonder if they think that music has reached other ethnicities.
When I went in there to pitch them about our series, you know, getting you to set up there during airline fares their busiest hour, they were a bit skeptical. Then I mentioned Mulatu, and they were like "yeah, we're all big Mulatu Astatke fans, sure, you guys can come in.
"Outro" is my own composition. I thought it was fun to not really sneak that in there, 'cause you can't really airline fares sneak "Outro" anywhere. It just comes in like a bat out of hell. Especially coming out of that jazzy, hypnotic vibe of Ethiopian music, then you're hit with raw American, naughty punk.
It's a sample base and it comes from a few things, a drummer named Anthony Park who plays for Mars Volta, airline fares doing the drumming behind a composition of drum programming I'm doing. The bass is played by Lonnie Marshall who is part of an L.A. group called Weapon of Choice. The rapper is named Blackbird. He's an L.A. emcee, vocalist, artist. The guitar sample airline fares comes from a group, airline fares the song that they did is kind of punk, called Fine Art and they're from Minnesota. The song is called "Big Kids in the Alley," where I chopped up that guitar to mix it. It's kind of an industrial, slam it, jam it, punk-rap song. It's my latest single so I thought I'd be nice to pub that and terrorize the boardwalk of Venice Beach with it.
Venice Beach is a home for a lot of artistic endeavors. You see a lot of artists playing, painting, skating - there's a lot of energy and a lot stimulation there. Always has been. "Outro" seemes to be the best fit for that kind of energy. airline fares For me, I just see Venice boardwalk as just a frazzled airline fares kind of, over-stimulated. It's just moving so fast. I always envisioned "Outro" being closely tied with skate culture, to the movement. Initially we wanted to do it at a skate park but we thought the boardwalk airline fares would be a little more suitable.
The set up had to be done so quickly to not disrupt airline fares the vibe of the boardwalk. I'm not even sure it can be disrupted because it seems like that's what makes Venice boardwalk, Venice boardwalk. It is seemingly disrupted with things going on here, there. I think we set up in record timing except the whole sound system we broke it down in five minutes.
Yeah, That goes back to what I was talking about where its big city life, anything can happen anywhere. Everybody is braced for that possibility, so it doesn't even really affect them. At a place like Venice Beach, where anything and everything will happen, airline fares I think people are almost immune. It's like the crowd that's there is as punk rock as "Outro" is, you know, because they're like, "So what? We get this all the time."
For Santa Monica, I chose the classic 60's song, "Stranger on the Shore" by Mister Acker Bilk who is a clarinetist. That is the cliche, romantic song from movies set from the early 60's, late 60's where there's a romantic scene. They always play that song. Like Flamingo Kid , the Wanderers , movies like that. That song is saved for the pivotal romantic song scene. I love the song, also. When we were talking about doing something possibly a beach, I thought, there's no better song than "Stranger on the Shore." To recontextualize it in a DJ sense would be something I've never really airline fares done. That was a lot of fun. It was right there on the wet sand.
That was probably my favorite part of the day. Seeing the truck come up and we we're like, "Oh shit we're busted" and the life guard was just trying to go home, and let this group of guys with a generator, a loud PA, and turntables do whatever. It was pretty amazing.

Editors Note: An Ethiopian community thrives in Washington D.C., and is branching out beyond small businesses and cab driving to professional fields. NAM contributor Cristina Fernandez-Pereda is a journalism student. Her profile of Little Ethiopia is generated under the J-school partnership with American University .
WASHINGTON -- When Ethiopian mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals immigrants started arriving in the 1970s, 18th Street in Adams Morgan neighborhood was their first home. Then when prices went up, the community had to find a new place. The U Street corridor, an area that was largely abandoned, was perfect for a new community. They revived it with their restaurants and stores, and it became Little Ethiopia, with its heart beating at the intersection with 9th Street.
Dereje Desta is the publisher and editor of Zethiopia , the leading publication among the Ethiopian community in the metro area. For one morning, he became a guide to journalism students to help them immerse mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals in the community and learn what Little Ethiopia means beyond the intersection of two streets with more than two dozen Ethiopian-owned businesses.
Washington D.C. is home for the largest Ethiopian community in the country. Other large communities are in Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Seattle and Atlanta. As Selam Mulugeta, office mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals assistant for Congressman Mike Honda, chair and founder of the Ethiopian mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals American Congressional Caucus described, churches and Ethiopian-owned businesses mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals help authorities locate mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals this community all over the country. And most of them are in the nations capital.
mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals The number of Ethiopian citizens in the Washington, D.C. metro area varies all the time and no one has exact data on this population. According to the Ethiopian Embassy estimates, around 200,000 citizens in the metro area are of Ethiopian descent. The Ethiopian Community Center estimates around 150,000 people from the African country.
Most Ethiopian immigrants come to the United States for education purposes as part of the African countrys immigration policy, the Diversity mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals Visa Lottery -- an immigration agreement with countries that have low immigration rates to the United States -- but economic and political reasons are behind this decision too.
According to Desta, most Ethiopians consider that they are very well integrated in American society. The interaction between Ethiopians and Americans is not only limited to locals' admiration of Ethiopian restaurants.
"The Ethiopian community is very well integrated in the American culture because of all the business owned by Ethiopians and also because they work with Americans in other fields," said Hermela Kebede, mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals executive director of the Ethiopian mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals Community Center in Washington, D.C.
However, mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals Ethiopians are waiting to see how the community evolves, as they are in the middle of a transition between mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals the first generation of immigrants and their American-born mesa arizona mobile home vacation rentals children, who are now graduating from college.
Ethiopians have been traditionally known to work as cab drivers in the area. Even though there is an extended number of them who still do -- 11 percent of employed Ethiopians in the year 2000 were taxi drivers, according to Shaller Consulting. Many also hold jobs as university professors or accountants.
"We have also become wiser after living here for a while," Desta reflects after showing an Ethiopian-owned Italian Restaurant. La Carbonara -- the name of an Italian pasta recipe -- emerges right next to the Mexican restaurant El Sol, also an Ethiopian property. After some years in the restaurant business, Ethiopian immigrants are now renting their properties to run other kinds of businesses, Desta explained.
Some Ethiopian shops display Barack Obamas campaign message, 'Yes, We Can,' in their windows. It is, after all, something that applies to what many Ethiopian want to say about their community and their younger generation. They want to continue to prosper and thrive.

Many of the 20,000 people from Ethiopia and Eritrea living christmas family cruises in the Bay Area call Oakland home. Oakland North is taking a look at the culture and history of the Ethiopian or Eritrean community in Oakland christmas family cruises with "East Africans in Oakland" a series of profiles on everyday people living in the city.
"I was thinking 'Why are they saying that?'" says Tefferi, who is of Ethiopian descent and moved to the US from Ethiopia at a young age. "I did not understand it. I was thinking, 'They must not know us. They don't know the food I was eating when I was growing up.'"
Tefferi is bright-eyed and animated, with short brown curly hair that has streaks of blonde in it. She's sitting behind the desk of her office in the Brundo Culinary Studio, which she owns and recently opened inside the American Steel warehouse on Mandela Parkway in West Oakland. Tefferi also owns an Ethiopian spice shop by the same name, which is located on Telegraph Avenue next door to Café Colluci, the restaurant she has owned for 20 years.
Tefferi has made promoting Ethiopian food and culture to the world her life's work. She travels to the high plateaus of Ethiopia every few months to check on her growing spice business, and when she's stateside she's managing the restaurant, checking in on the spice shop or organizing cooking classes at the culinary studio. christmas family cruises She's also writing a book about Ethiopian spices.
Though she worked as a banker before christmas family cruises all things food became her job, Tefferi was first inspired to work with food when she was a little girl in the Midwest and people in her new country thought her entire homeland was engulfed in a terrible christmas family cruises famine, and she should be overjoyed about eating pizza and hamburgers.
"People need to understand there is a whole way of cooking and food, and I wasn't deprived. I was like, 'I want to introduce this food, and continue christmas family cruises to promote the positive side of it," Tefferi says.
Food should "heal a person" and "nourish christmas family cruises you," Tefferi believes. The food she promotes christmas family cruises is based on vegetables, unique spices and grains like teff , which is gluten-free and used to make injera, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread. All this food is slowly cooked, and above all else, healthy, Tefferi says.
In Ethiopia, Tefferi system, grandmothers and mothers instruct the next generation in their household's christmas family cruises culinary christmas family cruises traditions, and each house develops a taste unique from its neighbors. Girls start preparing salads christmas family cruises and spices when they're 10 years old for holiday meals. A woman who prepares good food and has control over her kitchen is called a "balemoya"—a woman of talent.
It takes time to prepare the traditional food, and attention to process is part of the tradition. In her culture, basil is called "sacred basil." It takes two weeks to prepare for the sauce for doro wat, a curry typically made with chicken that Tefferi says is the national dish. "You have to sun dry it, it gets separated, fresh garlic is added, fresh basil is added, then you mix it, you marinate it, you dry it," Tefferi says of the pepper process. christmas family cruises "It's really highly layered, christmas family cruises just to make peppers."
She's tried to transfer that taste, and experience, to her restaurant. The spices, and even the peas and lentils for Café Colluci are imported from Ethiopia, "to make sure we get the real authentic taste," she says.
In 1990, Tefferi quit her job as a banker in Los Angeles christmas family cruises to move to Oakland and start Café Colluci with two friends. christmas family cruises The Ethiopian restaurant is small and popular, with a lot of vegetarian options on the menu.
She soon found the work of cooking and running a restaurant was perfect christmas family cruises for her. "I always had the desire to create the food that I ate when I was young, so [the idea of owning] the restaurant really appealed to me," she says. "Then I got into it. I said, 'I like this, I can cook, I don't get tired when I cook. I really enjoyed it. When I started enjoying it, I started developing a business for it."
At that time, during the early 1990s, North Oakland already had a vibrant Ethiopian community for decades, and there were also a few restaurants specializing in Ethiopian christmas family cruises and Eritrean food on Telegraph Avenue. But the number of North African restaurants in the area has since at least doubled, as the population of North Africans christmas family cruises living in the area has slowly grown.
Tefferi says she thinks the large number of restaurants is tied to Ethiopian culture. No one eats alone in Ethiopia, she says. "One guy would not sit by himself at a table and eat, that's just not sacred," she says, and people gather at meal time to talk about everything. christmas family cruises There are a large number of young single men in Oakland who don't really cook for themselves much, and restaurants offer the opportunity to eat with a group, whether the people at the table are familiar or not, she says.
At Café Colucci, the kitchen staff prepare a base sauce that can be purchased separately from the meal as a take out item — then they just have to add meat to cook it at home. "They get together because they have to eat communally," christmas family cruises Tefferi says of the young Ethiopian men who typically buy the pre-made sauce.
christmas family cruises North Oakland's North African restaurants christmas family cruises aren't joined by a formal business association, but owners and employees know one another and are "socially intertwined," Tefferi says. "We go to the same church, or if someone gets married, everyone gets together."
While working at the restaurant, Tefferi says she had an "erratic" spice supply from Ethiopia, so in 2006, she travelled there herself on business for the first time. She went to learn how the spices are made, and studied the blending, selecting and growing skills of spice makers, especially well known older women, who she would sit with for hours and interview on the process of making spices. She acquired a space to manually process materials and create spice blends. Many of the seeds are unique and grow in the wild, like Ethiopian oats, which are found in the high plateaus of the country.
She now goes back every few months, so often that she estimates she's there "five months a year." She's working on the factory christmas family cruises she owns where spices are blended, christmas family cruises looking to add solar energy and a larger, more functional building, where she can start packaging spices. She employs 32 women, currently, and hopes that her staff will grow to 200 workers.
On her desk in the Brundo christmas family cruises office, she has a small, round black clay pot that is used to make butter and was made by one of the women that work for her in Ethiopia. Tefferi strung a necklace around the jar and uses it to hold jewelry now.
As with food, sharing is very important in Ethiopian culture, Tefferi says, and so since she has been successful, she feels the obligation christmas family cruises to help others. christmas family cruises  "They say rich is not when you have money, it's when your goodness impacts others positively," Tefferi says.
I love Ethiopian food I grew up eating it. Even in Ethiopia, the majority of people went out to dine in Ethiopian Restaurants. My mother was Balemoya it took only one bite of her cooking to fall in love with her preparation style.
The secret to making good dish is the spice and how one takes the time to simmer the onion. Preparing the basic ingredients christmas family cruises is a lot of work. The butter and pepper take a lot of time and patience to prepare in advance.
Regionally, Ethiopia is in East Africa. Referring to it as part of North Africa is a failed attempt to connect it to the so-called middle christmas family cruises east in the same way that it happens with Egypt (more understandable though because of the heavy arab influence on Egypt and it s actual location in North Africa).
Quinton, you re right! It was indeed a fatal error, Ethiopia is regionally part of East Africa. I ve changed the headline to East Africans in Oakland which is what it should have been called all along. Thanks for helping us catch the mistake.
If she was a little girl in the late 1980 s (say 1987 or 1988), then she quit her job as a banker in 1990 (this means in just 2 or 3 years, she grew up from a little child to a professional banker which doesn t make sense at all).
Thanks for this great article. A remarkable lady, entrepreneurial spirit by a woman who d dedicated her time to promote Ethiopian food, culture. Very commendable. I came across christmas family cruises many ignorant people myself who often asked me how people managed to live in Ethiopia without food etc. The western media especially BBC portrays the country so badly, don t report much on positives, the very rich food culture in Ethiopia. Ethiopian food has massive potential christmas family cruises to be as popular christmas family cruises as Chinese/Indian. So, thanks for this wonderful christmas family cruises article, big thanks for Mrs Tefferi for her endless efforts, dedication.
It is perfectly possible for Mrs Tefferi to be college student in the 80s and Banker in 90s. College is part of growing up! What is your reason for focusing on her age rather than her massive achievements? As somebody said it above Ayyi Habesha
I just want to say thank you for your dedication for yourself and for introducing our beautiful culture and as well as our beautiful country. Even though, Ethiopia is known as a poor and starving country in the world, we have a wonderful christmas family cruises culture that we have to proud of. Keep up the good job proud of you. FM from Purdue University Indiana
Thank you for such inspiring article. I know Fetle and I am so proud of her. She is hard working and dedicated. We all should learn from her to pursue our dreams and ambitions. Having an individual like her enriches the cultural awareness of the community and makes it easy for society to adapt and discover new culture, be it food or anything else.

I ve never been one to be swayed by the idea of All You Can Eat .  I don t enjoy buffets.  Foods marketed by their weight (e.g. a two-pound burrito) do nothing for me.  I prefer quality over quantity.  However, at my favorite restaurant, Rahel Vegan Cuisine , I must confess cheap car rentals in atlanta ga that gluttony almost always gets the best of me.
When my husband, David, and I are planning to visit Rahel in Little cheap car rentals in atlanta ga Ethiopia in Los Angeles, we like to arrive famished.  I want to stuff myself with as many stews (called cheap car rentals in atlanta ga wots) as I possibly can, scooped with injera, which is a spongy fermented bread made of teff flour.  (This means that Ethiopian food is a fabulous choice for our gluten-intolerant friends.)
Rahel is nowhere near our home, which could be a deal breaker for most restaurants.  However, the food at Rahel is so delicious, we'll brave the 10 freeway, no matter how geographically undesirable the location might be for us.
The interior of Rahel is simple and unassuming.  Umbrellas hang from the ceiling as decoration.  When we enter, we are greeted with a friendly smile and taken to a table of our choosing.  Depending on the size of the group, diners can sit at standard tables and chairs or traditional Ethiopian chairs with basket-like tables called mossab. Underneath the lids of the mossab there is enough to space to hold a round serving tray.  The chairs only extend to the lower back, and that encourages diners to sit forward towards the meal and the others dining with them.
To drink, I enjoy the mango strawberry juice.  It is thick almost like a smoothie and full of the deep flavors of mango.  David prefers their Kombucha tea sweetened with raw agave syrup.  For those wanting to imbibe, the restaurant does not serve liquor; however, you can bring your own wine or beer, and they don't have a corkage fee, which is unheard of in Los Angeles.  The 7-11 a few doors down sells Yellow Tail for those needing some last minute Shiraz.  The servers will bring a wine opener and glasses to the table.
Before the food arrives, a server comes to the table with a basin and pitcher, so that all of the guests can wash their hands.  It's the little details like that which elevate the meal from just a dinner to a dining experience.
Traditionally, Ethiopian food is eaten with no utensils and injera is used to scoop the stews.  However, silverware is also available.  We never use the utensils. A big part of the fun is eating the tempting stews by hand.  It's wonderful for a date night, because there's something very tactile and sexy about eating with fingers instead of forks.  The server returns to the table as soon as the injera runs low and will offer to bring more.
In addition to stews available a la carte, there are a variety of combination cheap car rentals in atlanta ga plates.  To satisfy our palates, we always pick one of the combo meals.  My personal favorite is the Hudade Special Combo.  It comes with Shiro wot (chickpea stew), split lentil stew, yeakilt stew, split-pea stew, string beans mixed with carrots, yeshimbra assa (powder chickpea cheap car rentals in atlanta ga stew), greens, cheap car rentals in atlanta ga yebagela siljo (broad bean paste), stuffed green peppers, cheap car rentals in atlanta ga tomato salad, sunflower mixed with injera, and salad.  The stews are simple and succulent.  The flavors are deep and almost melt in the mouth.

God, I love Rahel! I can t even put into words how delicious this food is. Whenever I go there, I always stuff myself, because it s so damn good. The first time I went to Rahel, cheap car rentals in atlanta ga I asked if the server would wrap up all of our leftovers in the injera bread like a big burrito. Sure, I felt stupid, cheap car rentals in atlanta ga but it was worth it.

As is customary on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we profile a random reader to get their recommendations for the best spots to lunch near their work. This week it s Stacey, a professional eater who wishes she lived in Japan.
Favorite Kind of Food: Anything from the Motherland, especially things in the soup-noodle form ramen, pho, duck noodle soup thai-town style and wonton mien. I also can eat NY-style pizza: cruise small ship to alaska Joe s in Santa Monica cruise small ship to alaska (111 Broadway) and Valentino s in Manhattan Beach (975 N Aviation Blvd) are my faves. Cheeseburgers: Pasadena s Pie n Burger (913 E California Blvd) and In n Out are the clear winners here.  Sushi: Echigo in West LA (12217 Santa Monica Blvd) and foie gras any day.
Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch: My favorite lunch spot within walking distance from work is Chimu (324 South Hill Street). I ve never had a bad dish there. The quality of food and attention-to-detail are insane especially at the price point. They have an amazing dish there called Estofado de Lengua (yes, tongue) that has been stewed for hours in a tomato-like sauce. Added bonus: it s served with a really good quinoa salad. (Too bad it s closed now !) If I m looking for a quick option, I ll go to Mendocino Farms (444 South Flower cruise small ship to alaska Street). Since I m a creature of habit, I never veer and always get the Pork Belly Bahn Mi. Time saving tip: call-in your order ahead of time to avoid the huge line.
Places you ve discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: During a "Midtown Lunch Live" moment at Scoops Westside (3400 Overland Avenue) I learned about Sangak Pizza from Naan Hut . Who knew that Naan Hut had pizza!?
The farthest place you'll drive for lunch on a normal day? If I have time, I ll drive out to the San Gabriel Valley and have lunch at Golden Deli (815 West Las Tunas Drive) for an eggroll fix or 101 Noodle Express (1408 East Valley Boulevard) for their beef roll and beef noodle soup. Another lunchtime fave is Sapp Coffee Shop (5183 Hollywood Boulevard) cruise small ship to alaska in Thai Town for their Boat Noodles. On days I m working from home, I ll usually go to Alejo s (8343 Lincoln Boulevard) for their Alejo s chopped salad. It s the best chopped salad in LA. There are two locations, but ONLY go to the Manchester location.
Dream job location (anywhere in the world), purely for lunch purposes, and why? I d love to work in Tokyo, specifically, in one of the department store food halls because that is THE mecca it s the ultimate candy store. A ton of really good, high-quality, quick options in one condensed area; What more could you ask for?
Ethiopian on the westside?  I m pretty sure there are zoning laws in L.A. that require cruise small ship to alaska all Ethiopian restaurants be located on Fairfax, right? Got a recommendation for Stacey? Put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week's Profiled: L.A. I skipped over it for years, dismissing its expensive menu and non-authentic looking dining room for Rahel or Merkato (or sometimes Awash on Pico). But Genet s food is rich and bold, making every other Ethiopian meal on Fairfax taste like watery gruel

One of us really likes Ethiopian cuisine. The other has only eaten it once, and ordered the fried chicken. We'll let you guys guess at who was happiest about eating at Rahel . But in the end, we both walked away satisfied and with full bellies. On one block of Fairfax, between Olympic Blvd. and Whitworth Blvd., lies a strip of restaurants known as Little Ethiopia . Well, that and an oddly placed amazing holiday inn express bakery to celebrities. You probably can't go wrong eating at any of the restaurants, but per your votes, our destination was Rahel Ethiopian Veggie Cuisine, Los Angeles's only vegan Ethiopian restaurant. Walking in on a Tuesday evening around 8:30pm, there were customers holiday inn express at only two tables. We also noticed the lack of air conditioning, in which leaving the front doors open would have helped the warm, slightly stale air. For a starter, we ordered two sambussa ($2.50 each) and ordered the yeduba wot (pumpkin stew seasoned with assorted spices) holiday inn express $10.95 and zucchinni wot (zucchini stew seasoned with assorted spices) $9.95, for our main course. All dishes are prepared daily using only olive oil and grape seed oil. Similar to the Moroccan restaurant we visited, a waitress brought water to the table so we could wash hands before eating. holiday inn express Soon, we learned why this was important.
After a short wait, the sambussa arrived but they didn't last long. A sambussa holiday inn express is basically a triangle shaped pastry, filled with lentils and fried until golden brown. Yet surprisingly, they weren't oily. The shell was crispy with a light, grape seed oil flavor. The spices were very minimal, if any. We weren't able to place a finger on a single individual holiday inn express spice. Served with the sambussa are a red chili sauce and a jalapeno sauce. The waitress warned us that both were very spicy. Romeo agreed, and enjoyed both sauces.
holiday inn express Soon after we enjoyed the sambussa, we were brought the two wot (traditional Ethiopian stew) with accompanying injera – a form of bread, holiday inn express tortilla, sponge that is used to eat the stew. This is when you become thankful they had you wash your hands because what they didn't bring was silverware. Instead, a large, round plate holds one round piece of injera. The waitress scooped a bit of the zucchini stew and some of the yeduba stew onto the injera. We were then left to dig in. To eat the stew, you tear off pieces of the injera and use it to scoop up the rather large chucks of zucchini and pumpkin and place them in your mouth. If you haven't enjoyed injera before, you're in for a treat. As our friend Gina describes injera, it's kind of the texture of a wet chami used to dry a car with. Let's just say you either love Ethiopian food, or you have a strong dislike for it. Besides the distinct texture, injera is also uniquely sour. The bitterness leaves a marked flavor in your mouth, which defines Ethiopian cuisine. We believe both stews incorporated the same red chili sauce as the base, used to simmer the different vegetables respectively. One thing we didn't expect was the spiciness of the red sauce. If you are sensitive to hot spices, we'd recommend discussing that with the waitress before hand and seeing if any stew comes in a more mild sauce or staying away from the stews all together. holiday inn express Not sure why, since the flavors were very similar, but we preferred the pumpkin over the zucchini. In both, we weren't able to discern holiday inn express any ingredients beyond the vegetable, chili and oil. The flavors were earthy and complex, but so well blended that you couldn't taste any individual ingredient. Researching Ethiopian holiday inn express cuisine on the internet was definitely going to be needed.
By the time we left Rahel, a few more tables of patrons had been sat from a range of young to old. Since no other cuisine is around, one only travels to this block of Fairfax when craving Ethiopian food. And there isn't a better place to satisfy this craving than Rahel. Fresh food, bold flavors and a comfortable atmosphere are guaranteed. If you prefer to sample a broad range of the cuisine, Rahel offers a lunch buffet daily from 11am-3pm.
Below is our take on the traditional Ethiopian Yeduba Wot. While we have no idea exactly how they prepare theirs, we looked around online for recipes then combined that knowledge with the flavors we tasted in the original holiday inn express dish and went from there.
Cut pumpkin in two and remove the seeds with spoon. holiday inn express With vegetable peeler, remove skin from outside holiday inn express of each half. Slice into 1" thick slices then cut into 1" cubes. In a large heavy bottom pot, add oil, onion, garlic, ginger. Cook over medium heat until translucent and oil has incorporated the flavors into the onion, about 7 minutes. holiday inn express Add awaze or berbere, salt and black pepper and mix. Lower heat to medium-low and cook until oil becomes thick, about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn heat off and allow to cool slightly. Add mixture to a blender holiday inn express and blend into paste. Return paste to pot and reheat over medium-low heat until paste begins to bubble. Turn heat back down to medium-low and cook for an additional 10 minutes to allow paste to thicken even further. Add water, turn heat to high and bring to a boil. Add the pumpkin, bring back to boil, then turn heat down to a simmer and cook for another 10-15 minutes, or until pumpkin becomes firm yet tender. Stir occasionally to prevent holiday inn express from burning.
Sift teff, all-purpose holiday inn express flour and salt in a mixing bowl and mix together. Add water. holiday inn express Use an egg beater to mix together until forming a smooth batter. Store in refrigerator for two days, allowing batter to ferment. holiday inn express Oil a large nonstick holiday inn express pan and heat over medium-high. Add a layer of batter to pan. Cook until injera looks dry and sponge-like. Remove bread and allow to cool.
Place one injera in the middle of a large, round serving platter. holiday inn express Scoop a small portion of wot in a few different places on the injera. You can also serve the dish with a garnish of diced tomatoes, jalopeno and red onion. Extra stew can be served on the side in a bowl, along with a basket of additional injera.
While the wot recipe doesn't look too complicated, it was fairly hard to figure out exactly which spices they incorporated and how much water they used to create the consistency of their stew. Rahel used pumpkin in their dish, but being out of season, we had to settle holiday inn express for kabocha squach. So before we even started cooking, our flavors were going to be a little off. Luckily of us, and those of you who live in the LA area, there is a wonderful Ethiopian market directly across the street holiday inn express from Rahel. This allowed us to find a few of the distinct holiday inn express ingredients needed – teff flour and awaze. It also gave us an idea of what spices are common to the cuisine. And if you really want to go the easy way, you can also buy your injera at the market.
The cooking process was pretty straightforward and simple. We judged ourselves lower for a few reasons. One: we were missing the key pumpkin ingredient. Two: our stew sauce was too thick. And three: our stew was darker in color than Rahel's. Other than that, we felt we were fairly close to their recipe. (insert smirk)
How would you rate our recipe? We look forward to hearing feedback from you guys. Do any of you have a favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Little Ethopia? If you often cook Ethiopian food at home, what spices and ingredients do you commonly use? Feel free to email us if you have any questions on the recipe and don't forget to vote for next week's restaurant!

The Vegetarian Combo ($14) is the most expensive in Little Ethiopia—but it s worth the extra scratch

Chef Genet Agonafer has ruined magical mystery tour all other Ethiopian restaurants for me. Her food is heaven; all other Ethiopian food is earth. I avoided her for years, thinking magical mystery tour the white table cloths, professional wait staff and candle lit dining room signaled a watered down "for white people" rendition of Ethiopian cuisine.  A tragic mistake. magical mystery tour  Portions here seem small compared to the other 20 or so Ethiopian places on this block, but this is truly a case of quality verses quantity. As Genet explains, she's the only restaurant on Fairfax magical mystery tour that doesn't cook their lentils in water. Like turn-of-the-century photographer August Sander's "People of the 20th Century" (where he tried to record all of German society - from industrialists to circus performers) I continue to follow my taste buds in shooting my epic 21st Century Los Angeles epicureal photo/video series that's suitable for framing.
And I film almost everything: from the Valley's Bob's Big Boy Coffee Shop and Eagle Rock's 1955 landmark of Italian cuisine, Casa Bianca , to L.A.'s latest hip speakeasy The Tar Pit (from Mark Peel of Campanile ) and everyone's favorite neighborhood Hollywood hang, Birds .
I record audio and capture a tasty photo/video segment of 26 local restaurants, at 10 second each, in this five-minute video serial. With more than 130 nighttime car rental places restaurant photos I've published on Twitter ( click here to see the latest ones), I am just scratching L.A.'s Teflon surface of unequaled dining experiences. This time I've shot a savory and intoxicating nocturnal mix of enticing cafes, pungent dives, and exotic ethnic eateries.
As an example, I walked the short block of Little Ethiopia on Fairfax car rental places Avenue in the heart of L.A., and zeroed in on Rahel , the only all-vegetarian Ethiopian restaurant in Los Angeles? Also, of special note, I take you inside the bustling kitchen of downtown L.A.'s cool and elegant Rivera - the kitchen and appetizer bar is separated from the outside by large ceiling-to-floor windows.
Be sure to check out my clip of Breadbar (a bakery/sandwich shop in West Hollywood), that is spearheading the celebrity chef Pop-up Restaurant theme -- this month featuring a twist on the budget "Japanese Salaryman" bowls of ramen, topped with pork belly and foie gras, from Chef Kazuo Shimamura. And, I also hit Ye Old Kings Head Pub/Restaurant (one block from the ocean on Santa Monica Boulevard) on the day USA fought England to a tie in the World Cup soccer game -- be sure to check out the rowdy, wild crowd out front!
The Chef takes the haute out of cuisine, creating recipes for the people. I cook with ingredients costing about 99.99 cents, or less, and I also find great meal deals throughout Los Angeles -- featuring playful prose, delicious photos and clever videos. It s hard to get people to join me for an evening of Ethiopian food. The food can most easily be described as mushy vegetables on a spongie crepe that you eat by hand. There s typically an assortment of lintels, spinach, and other veggies. And to top it off, there s sometimes a surprise dish that looks harmless but packs a powerful punch. What s not to love about it?
I came across La Reine de Saba while dining at Tien Hiang , the popular vacation rentals santa fe nm vegetarian Chinese restaurant across the street. vacation rentals santa fe nm Luckily, my friend vacation rentals santa fe nm Will was visiting Paris and I talked him into joining me for an Ethiopian meal.
The restaurant has the typical Ethiopian decor, it is clean, friendly, and they speak English. The majority of the menu is filled with goat, chicken, and fish. However, they do have some vegetarian options. Your best choice vacation rentals santa fe nm is the vegetarian plate. It includes salad, spinach, lentils, and another veggie dish. There will be ample crepes to eat with and no forks or knives.
The food was good. I would have preferred a bit more variety in the vegetable plate. vacation rentals santa fe nm I ve been to several Ethiopian restaurants and usually get more than 4-5 variations. It s also not spicy, which is a welcome relief the next day. If you know what I mean.
Ethiopian restaurants are more than a place to eat. There s a convivial vacation rentals santa fe nm atmosphere and food is celebrated. La Reine de Saba extends this with live music on special nights. I think I d go across vacation rentals santa fe nm the street to Tien Hiang if I were by myself, but La Reine de Saba is better for a group of friends who want to enjoy a festive night of mushy vegetables vacation rentals santa fe nm and spongie bread. There s a lot to love about it.

This marks the beginning of a weekly post series vacation rentals midcoast maine where I will highlight some of my favorite NYC restaurants. (I usually vacation rentals midcoast maine dine out once a week and my husband cooks once a week so that I don't get burnt out!)
December was a fun month filled with dining out with several friends. My friend Liz had suggested dining out an Ethiopian restaurant, so eight of us went to Queen of Sheba in Hell s Kitchen. You can tell that an ethnic restaurant is good when there are a lot of people from that particular ethnicity actually eating there and there were several Ethiopians eating at Queen of Sheba!
Ethiopian food is not my favorite type of food but I still enjoyed everything that I ate. If you are unsure regarding vacation rentals midcoast maine what to order, I recommend the combination vacation rentals midcoast maine platter. vacation rentals midcoast maine A couple of us bought the vegetarian one and one friend vacation rentals midcoast maine picked the meat one. The chosen dishes were served on top of injera, an Ethiopian flat bread staple. Everything was seasoned well but not too spicy. FYI: Ethiopian food can tend to be on the spicy side. Our server was warm and helpful when we asked her input regarding menu choices. The restaurant isn't especially spacious (a common NYC challenge), but our group of eight was comfortably seated. We all enjoyed ourselves and would recommend it to our friends.
In any event, Ethiopian food is a great healthy dining out option. The dishes vacation rentals midcoast maine are simple and served vacation rentals midcoast maine in small portions, which make the combination platters especially great for sharing. There are also several options for vegetarians on the menu. Some Ethiopian restaurants even have several gluten-free options.

A couple years ago I had the opportunity to go to Ethiopia on a missions trip. It was a great experience to a beautiful country that I grew to love. One of my favorite things about Ethiopia avis rental car sales was the unique food that they have full of spices, meat and a unique pita like, spongy bread called injera. After coming home I have started to seek out restaurants that specialize in this unique food and have shown others what it has to offer as well.  Since Los Angeles is a melting pot for all sorts of ethnicities and people groups it would only make sense that they would have an area dedicated to Ethiopia and this area is aptly called Little Ethiopia.
Located off Fairfax and the 10 freeway this area has at last seven different Ethiopian food places right next to each other. The area itself is a little shady at night time but it is a great place to experience your first time eating this unique food. My favorite of the restaurants in Little Ethiopia is Rosalind s but you can t go wrong with trying any of them as they all make the same type of food.
When you order Ethiopian food, you need to know beforehand that the food that is ment to be shared. Most often people will order the meat sampler and the veggie sampler when they go and this will cost around 30-40 dollars but can easily feed four people. avis rental car sales The food is brought out on a huge plate that is set in the middle of all the people eating.
I personally love injera and most people I have taken warm up to it fast. If you are adventurous, also try the honey wine which is an alcoholic beverage with a strong honey taste. Do not order kitfo though, as it is raw meat, you can see me eating it in Ethiopia  here .
You will not be given silverware as the food is meant to be eaten with you hands in this type of community setting. Eating with the injera will fill you up pretty fast and I have rarely seen a group of people take down the whole plate.
avis rental car sales So there is your introduction into Ethiopian food. I hope this blog made you want to try it as I really do think it is great, probably only want to eat it if your like being adventurous avis rental car sales though. Check out Little Ethiopia in Los Angeles and pick your favorite one, or go to mine (Rosalind s). Get directions and see the rest of the pictures avis rental car sales below.

I'm in a book club with some pretty amazing women. All of us are mothers -- read: limited vacation rentals on cape cod budget but willing to splurge vacation rentals on cape cod on something special. We read mostly fiction, and a couple vacation rentals on cape cod of books on our calendar are set in foreign countries, one in France, the second in Ethiopia.
We've decided that we'd like to discuss these two books over dinner. Could you recommend French and Ethiopian restaurants that might fit the bill? We're based in Northeast L.A., but we're willing to commute for good grub.
It's always good to theme the refreshments for book group. Unless you're discussing The Road , in which case I'd rather not know. It's even fun if you cheat. For the rest of her life, my daughter will probably wonder just how Little Women relates to a Swiss chard gratin -- but I digress.
For Ethiopian food, you pretty vacation rentals on cape cod much have to go to Little Ethiopia, that strip of Ethiopian-owned businesses on Fairfax just south of Olympic, which may not resemble Ethiopia per se, but certainly feels like Addis Ababa might if it were located a half-mile south of the Tar Pits. Everybody has her favorite among the restaurants in the neighborhood, and the reasons are generally sound. Nyala is still the laid-back, groovy one; Rahel the vegan one; Merkato the one the backpacker vacation rentals on cape cod crowd tends toward; and Messob the sleek one your parents would like. At Rosalind's you will hear terms like NGO and PVO batted about by your fellow diners. But I still prefer Meals by Genet , which is more like a bistro serving great Ethiopian food than a self-consciously exotic vacation rentals on cape cod restaurant, and the food is delicious, especially the mellow yet complexly spiced doro wot.
As for French food ... There are any number of serious French restaurants in Los Angeles, although many, many fewer than there were just a few years ago, and on the onion-soup end, the gastropub has thoroughly conquered the brasserie. If you're in Northeast vacation rentals on cape cod L.A., you're probably going to wind up in Cafe Beaujolais or Bistro de la Gare , which are just about right. If you want to go to a place where the waiter will make fun of the way you pronounce Pouilly-Fuisse, Le Petit Bistro is probably where you want to go. Or you could drive a bit further to Le Saint Amour , which will have all the andouillettes, escargots and boudin you could wish for, a list of authentically mediocre French wines, and profiteroles and peach Melba for dessert, but also a very un-Parisian relaxed friendliness that will gladden all but the hardened Houllebec fanatic.
Dear Mr. Gold,  Where can I find "Traditional" Roast Duckling, NOT in Orange Sauce, like the one they used to serve at Marcel vacation rentals on cape cod & Jean's in Montebello in the 70's? I don't think even TAIX does one, can you please tell me where I can find it?? Thank You!!!!                                                    LVL

Anyone who s said I do can tell you that marriage is as filled with pros (having a special paris vision tours someone who s legally obligated to listen to you complain about Valentine s Day, ingrown hairs, and the jackass who ate your sandwich/onion rings/pudding cup at work) as it is with cons (having someone who you re legally obligated paris vision tours to do the same for, knowing all the while that even that single guy who ate your onion rings is getting laid way more often than you are).
Thankfully, there s something new to add to the Pro column: having someone to double team the menu at Lalibela with. For those of you who have yet to fling yourselves headlong into the gustatory joy that is Ethiopian cuisine paris vision tours (and a sad, sad lot you are), Lalibela provides one of the finest examples of the style that I ve found in my extensive research (read: gluttonous eating) in New York, Los Angeles, and many many points in-between. (Take that, Little Ethiopia).
If you re new to the genre, do as I say and order one vegetarian sampler and one meat sampler. What arrives at your table will be a round platter of spongy injira paris vision tours bread topped with assorted piles of stews, lentils and mashed vegetables. Using your hands (no utensils here), tear off a two-inch square of injira and use it to grab from the piles. Pop the bundle in your mouth and prepare for speechlessness. This is a cuisine best eaten slowly with a Zen-like attention to flavor, texture and stomach fullness, which will creep up on you with surprising speed, so keep your wits about you and make note of every flavor. I promise, you ll forget about those onion rings in no time.
Injira makes you full really fast and then after an hour or two, you could eat some more!! It s all really good for you so if you are looking to diet or lose weight or just be healthier, paris vision tours try Ethiopian cuisine.

I love Ethiopian food. It s exotic, healthy and very tasty. My favorite Ethiopian restaurant in LA is Nyala. Nyala is located in Little Ethiopia, the stretch of Fairfax between Olympic and Pico that is filled with Ethiopian stores and restaurants. Nyala is a great place to go for dinner after a day of shopping or movie-going at the Grove.
Ethiopian food is all about the spices and Nyala does not disappoint. For a first time visit, here s what I recommend ordering for the table: get the Vegetarian Combination montreal downtown hotel online reservations (small portions of each of their vegetable dishes including Red Lentil Stew, Yellow Split Peas, Bean Stew, Collard Greens and Mixed Vegetables, which are carrots, potatoes and cabbage cooked with garlic and ginger), the Doro Tibs (boneless pieces of chicken breast montreal downtown hotel online reservations sautéed with onions, garlic, tomatoes, seasoned red pepper sauce and seasoned butter) and the Shrimp Tibs (similar to the Doro Tibs but with shrimp). You can order the food as spicy or mild as you want. I also recommend trying an Ethiopian beer or Nyala s special iced tea. I m not a big iced tea drinker, but I love the iced tea at Nyala; it s spiced and really unusual.
Your dinner at Nyala will start with a complimentary appetizer of spiced hummus and triangles of fresh baked pita. I could easily eat a few plates of this. The main course dishes are presented and/or poured montreal downtown hotel online reservations on top of a large round piece of Injera Bread. Injera montreal downtown hotel online reservations is the essential element of Ethiopian cuisine and is soft, spongy and slightly sour. It s not something that s amazing by itself, but it s the perfect accompaniment for the sauced Ethiopian vegetable, meat and seafood dishes. In addition to the large piece of Injera under your main course dishes, they bring you a basket of Injera to eat your food with. Essentially the bread is your edible eating utensil; montreal downtown hotel online reservations you will not be getting a fork or spoon. You rip off pieces of Injera and use it to pinch and scoop up the rest of the food. Once you ve eaten the meat, seafood and vegetables, you will want to enjoy pieces of the large round Injera at the bottom, which has soaked up the various sauces. Delicious.

It will soon be that time of year when many of us anxiously make Spring Break plans. Some will enjoy their break at home; others will fly to a faraway destination; some may even cruise tropical seas. However, most of us will load up our vehicles with friends, snacks and beachwear and drive to our Spring Break destinations. An annual migratory rite of passage: The Road Trip.
However, many of us forget to check critical safety items before hitting the road. A simple check of these items could mean the difference between a Spring Break that is memorable due to fun or one memorable for tragedy.
Many Spring Break road-trippers set off in the evening, planning to drive through the night and arrive at their destination in morning. However, the riskiest time for accidents is between the hours of midnight and six a.m. and night driving has a special set of risks. Two of the most obvious risks are darkness and fatigue.
Ninety percent of a driver s reaction depends on vision ; and vision is severely limited at night. Depth perception, new england inns for sale color recognition and peripheral vision are also worse at night . Fatigue and drowsiness pose substantial risks as concentration new england inns for sale and reaction time are impaired. new england inns for sale In a worse-case scenario, drivers may even fall asleep and lose control of their vehicle.
Seat belts save lives , but only when they fit properly new england inns for sale and are worn properly. Some vehicles on the road still use two-point lap-belt new england inns for sale only seat belts in the rear center position. If your vehicle has a lap-belt only restraint, avoid sitting in that position unless absolutely necessary. You do not want to be caught in the middle wearing only a two-point lap belt.
Three-point lap-shoulder belt restraints are far more effective at preventing injury than lap-belts new england inns for sale alone. In fact, lap-belt only systems provide almost no restraint in a frontal collision and, in some cases, can cause worse injuries than if a seat belt was not used at all.
When driving long distances, it is often tempting to adjust your seat belt for comfort new england inns for sale by incorporating some slack in the belt or even positioning the shoulder belt behind your back. However, these adjustments can make your seat belt completely new england inns for sale ineffective and can cause severe injury in a collision.
The lap portion of your three-point belt should new england inns for sale fit snugly new england inns for sale across the bony structures of your hips and pelvis. The shoulder portion should be snug and cross your body at your sternum (breast bone) and shoulder. Make sure to adjust your belt so that it fits properly. Never let the seat belt cross over your neck and never tuck the shoulder belt behind you.
Many of us are tempted to stretch out and lie back during a long road trip. But did you know that if your car seat is reclined, a three-point belt becomes essentially useless because the shoulder belt moves away from your body? Most passengers simply do not understand new england inns for sale the dangers of reclined seats while traveling.
Many passengers simply assume new england inns for sale that they will be safe if they are buckled in. Few understand that more space between the seat belt and your body increases the risk of death or serious new england inns for sale injury caused during a collision when your body either new england inns for sale slams against the seat belt or submarines and slides underneath the seat belt.
Car makers have known of this danger for at least forty-five years , but have done little to warn motorists. Warnings for this danger may be listed in a several new england inns for sale hundred page owner s manual, but are often difficult to find. Manufacturers could incorporate a simple light or bell reminding passengers to stay upright (much like a seat belt warning light or chime), but so far no manufacturer has chosen to incorporate this important safety feature.
Tires are one of the most important and most overlooked safety new england inns for sale components on your vehicle. There are many factors that can sabotage tire safety, including tire age, poor tread wear and depth, new england inns for sale and improper inflation.
Older or aged tires are a hidden danger because they can fail even if the tread depth is proper and even if they have never been used before. Aged tires can look perfectly fine on the outside, but fail at any time. Tires have a safe useful life of no more than six years. Tire makers and car companies new england inns for sale have known of the aged tire danger for decades, but have done little to warn motorists. Tires do not contain new england inns for sale an expiration date and it is nearly impossible for an ordinary new england inns for sale person (and even some tire specialists) to determine the actual age of a tire because new england inns for sale of the archaic codes used.
Check your tire pressure before starting your trip and before driving. Proper inflation new england inns for sale pressures can be found in your vehicle s owner s manual, on the inside of the driver s door, or sometimes on the inside of the fuel door. Adjust to the proper inflation pressure. Over-inflated tires can lose grip or burst. Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, new england inns for sale leading to lower gas-mileage and creating excess heat that can lead to catestrophic tire failure, including a blow out or tread separation.
new england inns for sale It is easy to become complacent or distracted during a long road trip. Many states have enacted laws prohibiting talking on telephones or texting when driving. You should check to ensure that you do violate any driving laws while crossing states with which you may not be familiar. Even if a state has not outlawed cell phone use or texting while driving new england inns for sale , you should avoid this activity. Studies have shown an increase new england inns for sale in collisions and accidents while using these devices.
You should be courteous to other drivers and, especially, tractor-trailers. You should always utilize turn signals to warn other motorists of your intention to change lanes. You should also leave plenty of room between your vehicle and those ahead of you. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least two seconds of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Use extra caution when driving near semi trucks . Studies have shown that semi trucks account for a disproportionate share of highway collisions and deaths. Tractor trailers make up only 3% of vehicles, but account for between 11% -- 15% of traffic deaths. Semi trucks can weigh more than 80,000 pounds and are not as agile as your passenger vehicle. It can be difficult for large commercial trucks to stop or swerve in order to avoid a collision.
Do not tailgate behind a big rig. Remember, if you cannot see the mirrors on the tractor s cab, then the truck driver cannot see you. You also need to give yourself plenty of room to stop your own vehicle if there is an emergency ahead.
Do not cut off a tractor trailer. Aggressive driving may distract or catch a truck driver off guard. Such driving new england inns for sale also reduces the available stopping distance for the tractor trailer in the event of an emergency.
Sometimes even safe drivers are involved in a collision. There are many factors new england inns for sale that are out of a driver s control such as defects in the vehicle , other distracted motorists or truck drivers, or even adverse weather conditions. If you are involved in an accident or collision, new england inns for sale it is important to keep the following in mind:
Take care of any emergency medical and situational needs first. Assess your own condition and the situation of others in your vehicle. If able, make sure you and your vehicle are clear of dangers such as on-coming traffic, debris or leaking fuel . However, new england inns for sale you should avoid moving injured passengers unless absolutely necessary in order to avoid making their injuries worse.
Call for help. In most states, you are required to report a collision, especially if injuries are involved. Call 911 if there are injuries or medical emergencies. If only a minor collision, you can call local law enforcement using non-emergency contact numbers.
Do not provide a statement to other drivers or individuals involved in the collision without first speaking to your insurance agent or an attorney. new england inns for sale Information you provide new england inns for sale may later be misinterpreted (or outright manipulated) by a defendant and used against you.
If seriously injured, you should contact an experienced attorney to ensure that your rights are protected and the defendant driver is held accountable for your injuries. A proper team of attorneys and investigators can ensure that all facts are uncovered.
Your attorney should retain an accident reconstructionist in order to determine how the accident new england inns for sale happened. The reconstructionist will calculate the speeds of the vehicles and determine the dynamics new england inns for sale of how the vehicles moved during the collision.
A biomechanics expert new england inns for sale or forensic pathologist can determine how your body moved during the collision to cause injury. These experts will analyze and determine whether new england inns for sale the vehicle properly protected you during the collision.
An engineer or design expert can determine if a vehicle defect caused your injury or made it worse. Sometimes, car makers cut corners on design and safety. These cost-cutting new england inns for sale measures can have devastating effects during a collision.
