Banyan Drive is THE hotel 'strip' of Hilo. Older buildings (1960s vibe) sit behind looming banyan trees that were once planted by famous or important hospitals in los angeles ca people like Franklin D. Roosevelt, hospitals in los angeles ca Amelia Earhart, Pat and Richard Nixon, hospitals in los angeles ca Louis Armstrong, and Cecil B. DeMille. I stayed at Reeds Bay Resort Hotel because it offered the best published price on that side of the island...or anywhere on the island, for that matter, if you want a private room. Admittedly, they're using the term 'resort' pretty loosely, but that's what I'd expect for less than $70 per night including tax.
Reeds Bay (and a couple other hotels, it appeared) offer accommodations to both guests and residents. I'd guess that about half of the rooms are occupied by people who live there permanently. The open-air lobby/community room has vending machines, a ton of books and magazines to read, and looks out on the small swimming pool right next to the big ocean (the bay right there is pretty rough and rocky...not a swimming area).
The carpeting on the stairs (no elevators) and in the hall of the three-story hotel is pretty worn out, and the cheap stickers designating the room numbers had me a little worried, but inside the room everything was immaculate. Wooden floors, cable T.V., and a BIG kitchenette which included hospitals in los angeles ca a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and even a rice-cooker, made the space quite comfy. There's no A/C, but the fan and breeze through your open window are more than adequate to keep you cool. The bed was comfortable, and I had a little lanai.
My biggest complaint was the sheerness of their curtains. I have eyelids made of rice-paper, and every drop of light drives me nuts. My room was facing another hotel, and I kept waking up thinking it was morning because of their lights. Only the sound of the invasive coqui frogs clued me in to the fact morning had not yet come.
Its location on beautiful Banyan Drive is fantastic, and the loop of enormous trees is a tourist destination in and of itself. Just a few minutes walk away is the gorgeous Princess Lilioukalani hospitals in los angeles ca Park and Gardens, and a ten minute stroll in the other direction is the only 24-hour restaurant in town, Ken's House of Pancakes . Reeds Bay is also just about a 5 minute drive to the biggest Farmer's hospitals in los angeles ca Market on the island (Wednesdays and Saturdays), and very near Hilo Airport.
All told, I'd stay there again. If you're hospitals in los angeles ca a person who likes to hang out in your room and spend all day at your resort, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a clean, friendly place to sleep on a budget, this is it.
