Verify that they have good reviews on TripAdvisor and CruiseCritic. Do not sacrifice a high quality experience in order to save a few bucks!
So you ve decided to get one of the coupon books but if you are like most travelers, you ll only need a few coupons. Consider splitting the cost of the book and sharing it with a fellow traveler who is traveling before or after you.
IMPORTANT: You cannot separate the coupons from the TourSaver book!! Tour operators will not accept romantic hotels in san francisco coupons that have already been removed from the book. You must bring the whole book with you to your activity. The TourSaver book will have an ID number inside the cover. If you are traveling earlier in the summer and aren t able to find someone to share your book prior to your trip, you can sell your used book on eBay. PassPorter hotels in norwich ct s Open Mouse for Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line This book, which was originally hotels in norwich ct titled PassPorter s Walt Disney World for Your Special Needs , was written by Deb Wills and Debra Martin Koma from the excellent resource website AllEarsNet.com . Among the issues it covers are hearing and visual impairments, mobility problems, ADHD, autism, dietary issues such as allergies and vegetarianism, many medical conditions from diabetes to epilepsy, pregnancy/breast-feeding, size (tall/big) and age (infants hotels in norwich ct and seniors). Birnbaum s Disneyland Resort 2015 -This is the Official Guide, produced hotels in norwich ct with Disney s blessing. hotels in norwich ct Naturally it tends to glorify Disney a bit, but it provides plenty of useful, in-depth information about the two parks and the three Disney hotels. The Unofficial Guide to the Disney Cruise Line This is the Unofficial Guide s first guide to the Disney hotels in norwich ct Cruise Line, and it s a solid book. The onboard shows, restaurants, activities and other amenities on each of the four Disney ships are all discussed and rated with the kind of candid style that the Unofficial Guides are famous for. There are plenty of practical tips for how to choose between the different ships and itineraries, pros and cons of the various stateroom types, and how to prepare for your cruise. There is a nice color section at the front, which is a new feature for the Unofficial Guides. It is light, however, on details on port excursions, except for the ones available on Castaway Cay, which are covered well. A great companion to this book would be one of the By Cruise hotels in norwich ct Ship guides mentioned below.

Even if you don t currently have a Disney cruise planned, this is great armchair reading.
Birnbaum s Disney Cruise Line 2014   This official guide to the Disney Cruise Line is a very small (almost pocket-sized) volume hotels in norwich ct that offers basic information. The reviews of the various shore excursions are useful and surprisingly critical. Considering that this is an official Disney publication, we were surprised to find the authors stating that some of the excursions are not worth the money or not very enjoyable. That s good to know! This book is nowhere near as in-depth as PassPorter hotels in norwich ct s D

deedee: a great cruise..a few tips, we took it two years ago..excursions are stratospheric..do Mendenhall Glacier just north Of Juneau, on your own. Simply hop the local bus at the terminal, get off at the last stop, see the dramatic glacier sites and museum, take the frequent bus back...cost about $5.
You can stroll Juneau (State House, etc.) easily in about an hour...get a AAA guide book and it tells all you'd ever want to know. The "touristy" Red Dog saloon in town is a fun place for lunch. global impact travel The "tourist" police will not arrest you!
In Sitka, do it on your own (there is a "tender" to the port)..walking to the beautiful totem path in the totem park, about 20 minutes...take the bus back to center of town which stops at the Bird "Hospital"Refuge where you could get off for a visit..take in the Russian dancing show (all female, colorful and well done) right at the port, have lunch in town, and back to the tender. Russian dancers, about $10.
Ketchikan..do it all on your own...dock is right in town..walk to Creek Street, very picturesque, take the elevator up to next level for some more totem pole scenes, stop in for lunch at one of the cafes nearby.
Suggest you skip Victoria...you won't have much time to take the bus into town and back to the ship but if you haven't been there it might be worth it to you. We had been there twice including Butchart Gardens..and it was freezing cold in August..so we stayed on the ship.
You could try cruisecompete.com for quotes. Plug in your dates and several agencies will respond. Sometimes the rates will all be similar but some agencies might offer perks such as OBC, wine, dinner in specialty restaurant, etc. Good luck!
Why ruin your cruise by stressing a "Deal". Best to choose and take a cruise and not look back. Looking for deals overlooks the pleasure of it all. Best "deals" save a few bucks at best, and may have hidden traps.

During the course of our Alaska cruise , two words kept popping into mind to describe the incredible landscape we were witnessing: majestic and mystical. The majestic part came from the sheer vastness and height of the mountains surrounding us, crawling in lush evergreen trees. paris hotel It came in the abundance of animals in the wild—orca whales, humpback whales, brown bears, sea otters—and the all-encompassing blue water shaping unlikely islands out of the wild shore. It came in glaciers, slowly carving through valleys, meeting paris hotel the tide in shades of ice blue and purple, mixed with the earth’s sediment.
The mystical part came in even quieter moments at sunrise and sunset, stratas of fog mingling beneath mountaintops, a lone fishing boat chugging through the water back to its slip at the end of the day, hanging glaciers halted along mountaintops and waterfalls streaming from unimaginable heights. Alaska is all about expanse—expanse, and majesty and mysticism.
And I thought rainforests were reserved for the tropics. The Tongass National Forest  in Ketchikan is the largest national forest at 17 million acres, and it’s considered a temperate rainforest. Ketchikan paris hotel itself is the rainfall capital of Alaska with an average of 153 inches per year. This part of the state also has a milder climate paris hotel than the latitude suggests with average winter paris hotel temperatures in the 30s and summers in the 60s.
So much of Alaska’s economy is linked to the water and the fishing industry. With all of its wild land and waterways, seaplanes are abundant and a fairly common means of transportation. In Ketchikan, we took a “flightseeing” tour of Tongass National Forest on a seaplane to get a bird’s eye view.
While Alaska is, of course, part of the 50 United States, it doesn’t mean your cell phone is going to work while there. I had no problems with AT T. However, the rest of my family is with Sprint and they had no service at any port of call. Check with your service provider if this is important to you.
Upon arriving in Ketchikan on a cold, rainy morning, we took shelter momentarily at the visitor’s center and I thumbed through a few brochures to find out that you could indeed go snorkeling in Ketchikan in spite of September’s average water temp of 54 degrees. Later that day, while enjoying an Alaskan Amber beer at the New York Café , I overheard my waitress say that she went diving paris hotel that morning.
Alaska even has a surf pioneer, Scott Dickerson , who’s always on the quest for new surf breaks. Seriously, check out his website, the pictures are amazing. (I m also mildly obsessed with fine arts photographer paris hotel and commercial fisherman Corey Arnold who captures amazing paris hotel images of Alaska on his Instagram feed at arni_coraldo paris hotel .)
In Hoonah , we set sail with Captain Paul on a small vessel designed paris hotel specifically for whale watching . It was an exciting and, yes, majestic experience. We saw these graceful creatures crest and dive and blow water into the air, and we learned about their migratory feeding and breeding habits. We also saw lazy sea lions snoozing on channel markers, playful sea otters, seals and even a rare brown bear sighting on the beach.
In Juneau , we boarded a Coastal Helicopters chopper and flew to nearby Taku to view the Taku Glacier up close and personal. We landed on a dock in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by lush green mountains, a river and a massive glacier, to meet our guide Brian. He’s built a small home into the mountain where he lives a few days out of the week to take people touring . We hopped aboard an airboat that was actually built in Florida and traversed the river s shallow paris hotel melt water for incredible views of the Taku Glacier.
As Alaska’s capital, Juneau is the second paris hotel most populous city in Alaska at 30,000 people. Anchorage is the largest at nearly 300,000. Beyond that, the state consists of small towns and homesteaders who actually live off the land isolated from the rest of society for an entire season.
It’s really no secret that one of the draws of cruising paris hotel is purchasing jewelry, often with deep discounts. You’ll notice that in every port of call, the same jewelry stores, like Diamonds International , have shops mere steps from the cruise paris hotel ship terminal. Depending on your objective, this is either a great thing or it just means you need to walk a few blocks to get “off the beaten path” and into a more authentic side of town. For the true jewelry shopper, there’s even an onboard consultant that can guide your way and provide you with VIP shopping passes.
I mentioned in Part 1   of my Alaska cruise story that this trip was partly inspired by Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild.” London’s book was inspired by his time reporting on early frontiersmen settling the state during the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of the century. We learned about this history on a scenic paris hotel tour of Skaguay .
From humpback whale’s migratory patterns (they feed in Alaska and breed in Hawaii) to many tour operators, Alaska and Hawaii seem to have a strong link. From our shipboard naturalist to a tour guide who took us from Seward to Anchorage after the cruise, we learned that many people summer in Alaska paris hotel and winter in Hawaii. Not a bad gig.
We spent an extra night in Talkeetna after the cruise to see Mount McKinley with K2 Aviation . Their flightseeing tours are on planes with skis on their landing gear, allowing them to actually land on glaciers. Unfortunately, fog settled in during our flight, making it too dangerous to land, but the sights we saw were unreal.
Alaska is so wild and beautiful, and I couldn’t help but envy the rugged, pioneer lifestyle of those who live and work there. I think it would be an incredible experience paris hotel to live like that for a stretch of time.
As I mentioned in Part 1 of this post, we booked our Celebrity Millennium cruise paris hotel , shore excursions and flights paris hotel all on Delta.com with the AmEx Delta Gold  card in order to maximize our SkyMiles earnings. Booking the cruise through paris hotel Delta.com also earned us 3,000 SkyMiles per suite and a $200 resort credit per suite.
That’s the million dollar question, right? Without a doubt, an Alaska cruise is an unparalleled paris hotel way to cover a lot of land and for first timers to get an overview paris hotel of the majesty of Alaska. I think we all fell in love with Alaska more than the cruising experience itself, and if we were to return, I’d like to spend more time in one or two places rather than on a cruise ship. I’d love to see more of the Kenai Peninsula  and  Denali National Park.   Kodiak Island and the Arctic Circle also captured my imagination.

I haven t done many cruises, but I have done the 7 day from Anchorage (Seward) to Vancouver and in my opinion Alaska is one of the area that cruising makes a lot of sense and can save lots of money. Great views most of the time from the boat and hotels can be way expensive during summertime.
Hi Charlotte, yes, I agree. It was an incredible experience, gorgeous scenery and hospitality on the ship was wonderful. paris hotel All in all, a memorable experience I d recommend to anyone! Thanks for your comment.
We did a Royal Caribbean Cruise from Vancouver stopping in Hoonah, paris hotel Skagway, and Juneau. My husband was the leader paris hotel in wanting to see Alaska as I have always been more of a warm-weather girl .Well, I thought the cruise was spectacular, and I was so glad we did it. We, too, saw the humpback whales near Hoonah. Everyone should experience an Alaskan cruise at least once. It is really something special.
In Juneau paris hotel we opted for the easier 30 minute bus trip to Mendenhall Glacier. The video presentation was very helpful and the glacier was spectacular. We were unable to take the tram to Mt. Roberts as it was foggy/rainy.
In Skagway we took two tours and were so glad we did. The first one of the morning paris hotel was the train to the top of White Pass, and the second was a tour of the town on the Skagway Street Cars. Both very informative, and on the train ride we saw a large waterfall. Good that we chose the first one that day because a rock slide shut down the other two.
Glacier Bay was special paris hotel in that it has multiple glaciers. We went all the way to Margerie and were able to experience calving paris hotel of a major chunk of ice while there. In Ketchikan, we had three great surprises: the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show (hilarious), the Totem Pole Heritage Center, and a walk along the creek boardwalk back to the pier.
I went on an Alaskan cruise several years ago in June and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were blessed with mostly sunny days and fantastic weather. However, my friends and I really prefer to travel in the fall and they ve never been to Alaska. For those who ve cruised in multiple seasons, how does cruising in September stack up against a summer cruise? We don t have to worry about school schedules and prefer to go when most kids are back in school.
Stay away from the cruises that stop in Canada, if you are american and have been arrested ever in your life(DWI, any arrest that has been resolved), you will be detained at customs, the cruise line passes your name to customs without warning you. Canadian customs will give you options to fly home, return to the boat or be jailed in Canada. Cruise lines do not warn you upon booking. Be careful about any cruise and be aware of other countries laws.

Just got back form a wonderful experience. There are really quite a lot of good things to say about the Solstice. Many things enhanced the experience. The people working on the ship were always friendly and accommodating. The Cruise Director, naturalist on hand Brent Nixon, the entertainment and even the Captain, who had thought provoking comments during his daily messages. I've seen some negative comments, but I think people might just be unrealistic in what they're looking for. Going on an Alaskan cruise is an experience of a lifetime. This boat, what it provides, and the people bellagio hotel history working on it, created a wonderful experience. Would gladly go on this cruise again.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. We didn't have as good of an experience and we are doubtful that we will cruise again. For the expense of the entire vacation -- around $7000 for 2 adults and 1 baby (baby was free on all excursions and planes) -- we felt the cost wasn't justified by the experience. I think my parents had a good time though which was the point of the trip and they enjoyed the convenience of eating in the buffet everyday. They thought the shows were OK.
I was impressed by the balcony rooms -- I didn't expect a room and the bathroom on a cruise ship to be that comfortable. It was nice to comfortably take a shower with good water pressure. In general, though, we didn't get as much out of the things featured on the ship that others seem to enjoy -- the naturalist, the shows, bellagio hotel history etc. Cruising through Tracy Arm was truly beautiful, bellagio hotel history though. We are glad we did it once.
Fishee, sorry to hear you weren't thrilled about your experience. I would first say that we had sticker shock with this trip. We live in Florida, so if we want to travel anywhere out of the area, we have to fly, which adds to the cost of the trip. Also, we have three major cruising ports in our vicinity, which we don't take advantage of. My husband was not initially keen on this trip. We added the cost of the cruise and air fare and then saw the prices for the excursions. My husband bellagio hotel history agreed to go on the trip and had a truly great time, but it was not cheap. Our over all experience for two adults and two kids was a good more than the figure in your response. Will I travel like this every year, no, although bellagio hotel history I wish I could. The Captain of the ship said one morning "life is about adventures and taking chances, welcome to your adventure". We had a great adventure.
I realize I have a lot to learn about perks than can be offered. When it came down to when I was going to book the trip, I spoke many times with reps. from Celebrity, as well as Costco Travel. I asked Celebrity at least two times about credits and was told there were none since I was already getting a discount by being from Florida. On the other hand, Costco was providing a $350 credit. How could I refuse Costco, especially since the credit would come in hand with the pricey excursions. bellagio hotel history The rep. I had been speaking with from Celebrity bellagio hotel history called me one morning when he saw the trip was booked with another entity. He was pissed I didn't book through him, yet he didn't offer me anything other than a Florida discount when we spoke earlier. I'm sure there are deals to be had and will push for them for the next cruise.
Magpies, I can tell you the excursions my family took. To start, there are excursions some ports that sound similar. There are little differences bellagio hotel history to each and it became frustrating to distinguish one from the other. bellagio hotel history In case the itinerary and excursions do not change a year from now, your first destination is Ketchikan. We took a float plane ride through the mountains outside the town. We were able to get out of the plane and stand on it's floats on a magnificent lake. Getting out of the plane distinguished this excursion from similar ones. This was not inexpensive, however, it really was a truly unforgettable experience. In Juneau, the second destination, I've heard many people love the Mendenhall Glacier excursions. My younger son had to see a dog sled musher's camp instead. It was fun, just felt bad for the dogs. Then it was off to Skagway. A "must" is a ride on the White Pass Yukon Railway. You will see incredible sights and learn about the gold rush history of the area. This is a must. Skagway is charming and there are some nice shops on its main street. Lastly, off to Victoria British Columbia. We didn't have an excursion, but for a small fee, a shuttle bus will take you from the docks to one of three stops. We got off on Government Street. The famous Empress Hotel is there and also shops and restaurants. bellagio hotel history The harbor is nearby and street performers are there. It's a beautiful place to just sit and drink in the scenery. You'll be in Victoria for about 4-5 hours. Butchart Gardens was a popular excursion. Have a wonderful time on your trip.
I am afraid bellagio hotel history of heights and do not like small planes. ( I did a small plane to the Grand Canyon and over Kakadu but was a nervous wreck the whole time and felt sick ) as a result I did not do any flights last time.
We passed bellagio hotel history since we've been whale watching in California, MX, and Hawaii but this was a highlight of the trip for them. We also took a guided tour of Victoria and really enjoyed it. We skipped the Butchart gardens as it was late and getting close to dark and we heard admission bellagio hotel history was 30 pp. But we went through the beautiful public gardens of the Lt. Governor and toured around the neighborhoods for around 2 hours and we were very charmed by the town. We used a private van for our group of 9 people, $20 pp.
Magpies, something to pass on. We found out that for a fee of $20 per person, the ship will take care of sending your luggage to the airport, have the bags put on the appropriate flight and issue you boarding passes. We had 7 pieces of luggage and this was extremely convenient. I'm not an experienced cruiser, so I don't know if this service is common on ships. We had arranged for a car service to pick us up from the dock and requested a SUV to accommodate all our luggage. Having the ship take care of sending the luggage to the airport allowed us to call the car service with enough notice so they could send a smaller vehicle (and for a lower price). The car service forgot to send a car for us anyway, so we took a cab to the airport for even less money. There are tons of taxis and car services that are at the dock. Not sure what else to tell you. The attire in the evening is very casual. The dining room had a mixed bag of dressing and never heard of anyone being turned away. We ate most meals at the buffet and that is very causal. People did dress appropriately for formal nights. Don't know about cabins in general, but we had a Verandah Stateroom with Balcony and there was plenty of storage, even in the bathroom. Big ship but very easy to get around.

It was 5.50am in the north of West Bengal, where India meets Bhutan, Nepal and China. I returned to

At first I wasn't sure anything was happening; a second later I knew this would be a sight I'd never forget. Within 10 seconds the tiny almost-glow at the top of the mountain had grown to cover the whole face of Kanchenjunga, third-highest mountain in the world. And within two minutes all five white-capped peaks of the range, whose name means Five Treasure Houses of Snow , were bathed in rosy light.
It was 5.50am in the north of West Bengal, where India meets Bhutan, Nepal and China. I returned to the piled quilts and hot-water bottle of my bed, marvelling that the vista of India's highest mountain and the whole south-east wall of the Himalayas was just there, for me to feast my eyes on throughout our stay at Neora Valley Jungle Camp.
Quilts, hottie … in India? My friend Kalpana and I had been warned to pack thermals for a stay at over 6,000ft, but we'd still been taken aback by after-dark temperatures of around 3C, in a country that doesn't really do heating. But you'd put up with a lot for such peace, clean air and blue skies – particularly after the noise and dirt of Kolkata. Our cottage had two balconies, from which we gazed at valleys covered with rice terraces, then ridges hotels in rocky point mexico rising to the snowy peaks. I instantly understood why all-seeing Kanchenjunga is worshipped as a god by the local Lepcha and Rai tribes.
hotels in rocky point mexico The British Raj made the most of these uplands, establishing a hill station at Darjeeling, 80km to the west. Today, that town is busy with touts and tourists, and trekking routes in Singalila national park are well-known. hotels in rocky point mexico But Neora Valley national park has stayed under the radar, attracting mostly Indian visitors plus the odd western twitcher; almost a third of its biologically rich 88 sq km is still virgin.
Recently, however, ethical tourism organisations and NGOs have been spreading the word that visitors can be a boon to such precious areas, bringing income and promoting conservation. These mountains are, for example, home to cute-as-cute red pandas, and farmers persuaded that the animals are a tourist draw are less likely to fell their bamboo groves for crops or timber.
Neora Valley Jungle Camp was started in 2007 by India operator Help Tourism, on a profit-sharing basis with nearby Kolakham village, which tumbles down the hillside below. That was an easy sentence to write, but undersells the hard work that must have gone into building the lodge, with its six en suite cottages. The slope into which the camp is built is 1 in 1.6. Just moving around is quite a workout, never mind hauling logs or cement.
As well as the Jungle Camp where we stayed, the area is now starting hotels in rocky point mexico to offer homestays, simple rooms (always with that view) and three home-cooked, mostly vegetarian, meals a day for little over 10 a head.
The camp offers hotels in rocky point mexico villagers a ready market for milk, vegetables and spices. And the lodge's kitchen offered Kalpana and me delights made mainly from organic ingredients bought in Kolakham. Breakfasts, different each day, included a Nepalese speciality called sel puri . Similar to Spain's churros, these were made of dough piped into hot oil from a fist, and served with a dish of spiced fresh peas with soft cheese that I could happily eat every day. At other meals the delicious curries, several with vegetables we'd never seen before, got their kick variously from ginger, pepper or mustard, as well as the local dalle chillies. The latter are sometimes called Himalayan cherries but – yowza! – you wouldn't want to mistake them.
We were up before dawn again two days later, to drive deep into the national park to try to catch its inhabitants at their liveliest, soon after sunrise, hotels in rocky point mexico with guide Joseph Lepcha. The tribal surname means son of the soil , but Joseph has made the air and sky his business, with 14 years' experience as a birding guide.
Walk slowly, hotels in rocky point mexico he admonished, hotels in rocky point mexico as we yomped up the trail trying to get warm. Soon our heads were spinning with bar-throated sivas and white-browed shortwings and several others of the 314 species in this park. Most special were the green-tailed sunbirds. Found only above 7,000ft, they were jewel-like in red, yellow and orange, with iridescent blue heads: green tails were their least remarkable feature.
Heading back to the camp felt like going home – albeit a home where you could see your breath in every room, except the cosy kitchen. There, maid Shanti was singing beautifully as she made momos – moreish hotels in rocky point mexico stuffed Tibetan dumplings, and owner Mr Paul was keen to talk about philosophy and English literature. Grandad figure Kem Baradur is under five feet tall, but he'd easily hoisted my case on to his shoulder and, even at 65, he maintains the 3km of piping that brings water to the lodge from high in the park, and gathers firewood. He spends hours tramping in the jungle most days, just seeing what's new.
And he's not unusual: these people are living proof of the advantages of organic veg and exercise. Many of the octogenarians around hotels in rocky point mexico here are hale enough to take on the murderously steep and rocky 7km trek to Lava, a town of 500 people. It's quite the metropolis, though, on market days, when fleets of 4WD taxis bring in tribespeople plus their wares. A group of jolly elderly ladies waved from the back of one, their elaborate nose jewellery quivering.
hotels in rocky point mexico Dominating Lava is its monastery, with a riot of prayer flags, and two monks in deep-red robes looking fantastically picturesque hotels in rocky point mexico against blue sky and white mountains. Both 20, they told us they had been at the monastery since they were seven or eight. I asked about their day: prayer hotels in rocky point mexico 4.30am, breakfast 7.30am, classes including English lessons (one former teacher, Beki, co-presented Top Gear before becoming a Buddhist nun), and hours of debating. But they were interested in our lives, too, and asked what I would be writing about.
There is so much, I told him. Neora Valley has long been a wildlife-lovers' destination, but it is spreading its wings: a new adventure company in Pedong offers rock climbing, mountain biking and more. Over the next ridge, the village of Sillery Gaon calls itself The New Darjeeling : homestays in new chalets there cost 22 for two.
• The trip was provided hotels in rocky point mexico by On The Go Tours (020-7371 1113, onthegotours.com ) which offers a four-day/three-night package at Neora Valley Jungle Camp from 595pp (two sharing) including full board, return flights to Kolkata, transfers, guided walks, a half-day jeep safari and park fees. Accommodation in Kolkata was provided by the Park Hotel (+91 1800 102 7275, theparkhotels.com ), which has doubles from 69 room only

Interesting that even then, in his lowest moment, the question Cook asked himself apparently wasn't

Seven days to plan for the next series. Two more than planned, but still precious little time for Alastair Cook to stop and look at the landscape around him. A shame, because Cook has been travelling impressive terrain. In the background, distant peaks long-since scaled. Three Ashes victories, one of them as skipper, 766 and all that , the f irst win in India in a generation , 25 centuries. Between then and now, deep folds and dark valleys. The whitewash against Australia, a series defeat at home to Sri Lanka, a run of 15 months and 31 innings without another Test hundred. To the spot where he stands now, at the top of another upslope. You couldn’t call it a summit, since it is dwarfed by the heights that lie ahead. columbia river cruises But he will be happy, at least, to have finished the short, steep climb he has had to make in these last few weeks.
Cook has already written one book, Starting Out. He was only 24 when it was published, and the reviews teased him because he was too young, too inexperienced, to have much to say for himself. In the last 12 months he has been through enough to for a sequel, and in the 12 ahead, may find material to fill a couple of volumes. On Monday, England start their five-match columbia river cruises series against India. Then a seven-match tour of Sri Lanka before Christmas, and a triangular tournament in Australia after it. All in the run-up, of course, columbia river cruises to the World Cup next February.
Some England fans may feel about the 50-over game much the same way they imagine the Indians do about Test cricket. They can take-or-leave what they see as the lesser of the two formats. But the ECB, at least, are bent on winning the World Cup, and have made the performance in it a priority for the new management team. Which was one reason why, after all, they rearranged the Ashes, compressing two series into such a short space of time last year to allow a clear run to the tournament in 2015.
Mike Selvey makes the case that Cook should step down from the ODI captaincy , for the sake of his Test-match batting as much as anything else. The idea is that in 50-over cricket he is compelled to play at the ball on his off-stump, a habit that is hard to shake when he switches back to Test matches. Equally, you could argue that he should, at the very least, take a break from the ODI side this autumn so he has a chance to recover columbia river cruises from the seasons just gone. England columbia river cruises have been exhausting enough to follow, never mind to lead.
The strain has showed, as when Cook snapped at Shane Warne, and in Australia, at the SCG, he seemed to hint that he had had enough , and again after the fourth day of the match against Sri Lanka at Headingley, when he damn near admitted he had . It began with his team 106 runs behind, with six wickets to take and their second innings still to play. And it ended with them 297 behind, after an afternoon spent being belaboured around the ground by Angelo Mathews, and five wickets down for just 57 runs, nightwatchman Liam Plunkett last to go, chipping a drive to cover in the final over of the day. After stumps, according to the ECB’s managing director, Paul Downton, Cook asked himself “Do I really need this?” as he walked up to his hotel room.
Interesting that even then, in his lowest moment, the question Cook asked himself apparently wasn’t whether or not he was up to the job, but if he even wanted it any more. Cook has a stubborn streak that would shame even the most obstinate columbia river cruises mule. Sometimes it’s a hindrance. It can make him a little columbia river cruises too wary of new players, a touch too reliant on old ones, and a little slow to switch the team’s approach in the field. But the strength he draws from it has served him well this summer, when he has been beset on all sides. By the end of the defeat to India at Lord’s even his old friend, and recent team-mate, Graeme Swann admitted that he “desperately” wanted Cook “to step aside and take the monkey of captaincy off his back”.
If these things were decided by quorum, Cook would have been long gone. A chorus of former England captains, columbia river cruises men who knew better than anyone how he felt, what he was going through, were in agreement that he should step down. Warne’s words are one thing, those of Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, and Michael Vaughan another altogether. All three possessed, to differing degrees, measures of that same stubbornness Cook has shown. England captains don’t survive troubled times without being bloody-minded. But even they, with the possible exception of Atherton after he was accused of ball-tampering, never endured columbia river cruises anything quite like the weight of opinion that fell on Cook this summer.
Overnight at Headingley, Cook spoke to his wife, Alice, and made up his mind. And after play the next day announced “I’ve never quit on anything I’ve done”. A strong columbia river cruises statement. And one he had to reiterate, almost word-for-word less than a month later, after the loss at Lord’s. “I’m trying my heart out to do this but I need to score runs and we need to start winning. I’m here as long as they want me.” Cook is not a great orator. At times he sounded almost like he was selling himself to Alan Sugar across the boardroom table. But the blunt assertion bought him a little more time. He would be there till the end of the summer, at least.
Then the drop. At the Rose Bowl, Cook had 15 when he hit a thick edge through to Ravi Jadeja at third slip, off the bowling of Pankaj Singh. It was knee high, a little to the fielder’s columbia river cruises left. And he spilled columbia river cruises it. Cook’s form hadn’t turned, but his luck had. And while the 95 he made that day wasn’t columbia river cruises the defining innings of match, columbia river cruises it preceded improved performances columbia river cruises from all four of the senior players still in the side, who had, like their captain, been so lacklustre in their play to that point. The fortunes of this England team are yoked to their captain’s form. Cook averages 68 in the Tests they have won under his captaincy, 33 in those they have lost, the greatest disparity of any English skipper since Graham Gooch. Two scores of 70-odd followed in the next three innings. And England started to win. By the start of the Kia Oval Test he was smiling again, trading innuendos in his pre-match interviews with the press.
What has it cost him? What Atherton, Hussain, and Vaughan know from experience, and Cook is yet to learn, is that courage drawn from inner conviction is a capital store, and reduced by expenditure. In the last three years, Cook has had only four months that have been entirely free from cricket. His weary body may be fine, his mind, emotionally exhausted, may need more time to recover. He won’t get it, and probably wouldn’t want it if it was offered him. He is set on leading England into this ODI series, on through the World Cup, and beyond columbia river cruises into 12 arduous months of Test cricket. Neither Downton nor Peter Moores wanted to give Cook that “tap on the shoulder”, as he put it, and now they will be even more reluctant to do so, even just to tell him to take a break, since his strength of conviction has helped turn this series against India and the odds.
Cook will be loath to skip one of those ODI series in the next few months, since they are such a vital part of preparing the team for the World Cup. Equally, he will want to be in charge for the Test series against West Indies and New Zealand next spring, since this is such a young team, and they are heading into an Ashes series. And he will get his way, since he has been vindicated by what has happened this summer. His stubbornness paid off once. So he will turn to it again and again in times of need. After the Ashes, a trip to the UAE to play Pakistan and a tour of South Africa. There are four series, then, one the World Cup, one an Ashes, one versus a team who trounced England 3-0 last time around, and the last against the world’s No1 side, which will come to define Cook’s captaincy, columbia river cruises and this era of the England team.
And Cook will go on digging deep into himself, driving the team on.
